Subject: To an unknown god

Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,
Join us this Sunday for ONE SERVICE at 9:30 a.m. We will honor all veterans with special music and prayers. In Sunday’s 2nd Lesson, the apostle Paul is in Athens and refers to an altar in the Roman temple whose inscription reads “To an Unknown God”. Pastor’s message will explore the question, “What does it mean to follow Jesus in an increasingly agnostic society?” See you Sunday!

You can change lives here and around the world! Sunday, June 1, 2014 join us in a fun 3 mile walk/run in Chicago to send a mission team 2,825 miles to Central America! Please sponsor walkers who are raising funds for travel costs, materials to build houses and churches, distribution of medicine, and to feed refugees this summer! We will meet at 7:45 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church on 4300 N. Winchester Ave, Chicago, IL 60613 (1 block south of Montrose, 1 block east of Damen.) We’ll be walking to Welles Park, circling it twice, and then heading back to Pilgrim for a celebration! For more information, please contact Pastor Kristian Johnson at or Pastor Anna-Kari Johnson (773) 990-0814.

Mothers of Preschoolers
Join us at MOPS on June 5th, 9:15 a.m. for a very special guest speaker, author Gillian Marchenko. She will be here to talk to our group about her book, her life raising daughters with down syndrome and competition and depression in motherhood. This is an open event that all moms are welcome to attend and copies of Gillian's new book, Sun Shine Down: A Memoir, will be available. This funny, friendly mom is a great speaker and has been recognized for her openness for the sharing of her story in magazines and conferences. RSVP to if you wish to attend. MOPS asks for a donation of $10 for anyone attending the meetings to cover expenses (this would include child care, coffee, snacks and more).

Dear Pilgrim Teachers, Students, Parents & Church Members:
Please, take the time to say a prayer for graduating students of 2014. As you pray, fold the origami butterfly to return to Mrs. Andreen for a special surprise for Pilgrim’s 8th graders during their graduation service. I will leave a basket for the butterflies in the office and on the table in the back of church. I will need the butterflies returned by May 23rd. Our 8th graders will be leaving the Pilgrim cocoon and spreading their wings. The butterflies will be a symbol of our prayers for them to continue their academic, social and spiritual growth.
Thank you, Shannon Andreen

Red Geraniums for Pentecost
Sunday, June 8 is Pentecost, and in keeping with Pilgrim tradition, the congregation is invited to bring red geraniums to decorate the altar. Why red? Red is the color for Pentecost Sunday. The geraniums will be planted in the church garden for all to enjoy over the summer. If anyone would like to volunteer to do the planting, please contact Chris Wallis.  It's a great family project--geraniums are very forgiving!

Our Prayer for Sunday
Almighty and ever-living God, you hold together all things in heaven and on earth. In your great mercy receive the prayers of all your children, and give to all the world the Spirit of your truth and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Acts 17:22–31;
In Athens, Paul faces the challenge of proclaiming the gospel to Greeks who know nothing of either Jewish or Christian tradition. He proclaims that the “unknown god” whom they worship is the true Lord of heaven and earth who will judge the world with justice through Jesus, whom God has raised from the dead.

The second reading is 1 Peter 3:13–22;
Christians have a zeal for doing what is right in God's eyes no matter what the circumstances because in baptism we are saved and made alive. Thus our Christian beliefs and behavior are to be a matter of public record just as our baptism is.

The Gospel reading is John 14:15–21;
In final words to his disciples on the night of his arrest, Jesus encourages obedience to his commandments and speaks of the Spirit, who will be with them forever.
