Dear Friends,

God is still speaking! Amid a lot of talk about words that are released or not being released, come hear a Word that brings peace to our hearts and to our homes. Released for us, and released for a hungry world. This Sunday, September 9th at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

We also resume the "Explore the Bible" Class for youth and adults at 9:15 am. and "Fun Summer Bible Stories" for children 3-12 right after the 10:30 a.m. service.
See you Sunday!

Welcome Seminarian Karl! Pilgrim is blessed to have received a student in the Mission in Context program for the 2018-19 school year. Students in the "MIC" program spend 7 hours learning and serving a week in a local congregation. Here is a note from our student Karl: “Hello! I am Karl Anliker, a second year Master of Divinity student at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. I grew up in Indiana and attended Valparaiso University before doing Lutheran Volunteer Corps in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I currently live in Hyde Park with my wife Charlotte who teaches Kindergarten. We love living in Chicago, exploring the Field Museum, and walking in our neighborhood. I am excited to learn and grow alongside God's faithful servants at Pilgrim this year.”

Exploring the Bible - Join us on Sundays starting today at 9:15 a.m. for "Explore the Bible" Class that is open to people of all backgrounds and levels of familiarity. We will meet in Maring Hall. We will skip Block Party Sunday, and resume on September 23rd.

New Member Exploration Classes - What does ‘Lutheran’ mean? How can Pilgrim help me and my family grow in faith? What does it mean to become a member of Pilgrim? If you’re at all curious about any of these questions, please consider attending an exploration class on September 23, 30, or October 7. Child care is provided throughout each class. Please contact our Church Office Administrator, Renee Stuedemann, at for more information. Thank you!

Fun Bible Time for Kids begins on Sunday, September 23rd, right after the 10:30 a.m. service. This is intended for kids from ages 3 to 12. It will meet during coffee hour in the Annex, the room right next to the kitchen.

Taking Faith Home is a devotional tool for families to use on a daily basis. It includes scripture readings, prayers and blessings to share. This week the theme is God’s word leads us to practice justice. Weekly handouts are on the table in the back of the church.

The Prayer List needs your Help - Please review the Prayer List in this Announcement to see if it is up-to-date. Please notify the church office at or make a comment on the Connection Card if there are any changes or updates. Thanks!

Are we ready to Co-sponsor another Refugee Family? We have completed a very successful refugee con-sponsorship with Bethany UCC, and our Rohingya family has moved to Milwaukee, beginning a new life with the Mom having a new Rohingya husband. We wish them all the best! We are so grateful for the countless ways many of you contributed to this project! Now we are ready to begin preparation for co-sponsoring a another family, with support from RefugeeOne. Thank you for helping us raise just over $2,000 at our March 4th Chili and Dessert Cookoff! Now we need to raise an additional $6,000 and $8,000. If you want to help with fund raising, be a tutor or mentor for the family, or are willing to take on specific small projects, we need to know. We’d love if have a big enough team that the work isn’t overwhelming for anyone. Please inform Judy Beaupre at or Renee at if you want to join us. Even if you were on the previous team, we still want to know if you’re available again.

The Chicago CROP Hunger Walk - 2018 marks the 36th anniversary of the Chicago CROP Hunger Walk. CROP Hunger Walks help children and families in the U.S. and worldwide to have food for today, while building for a better tomorrow. Our local efforts are making a difference! The Walk date is Sunday, October 14, 2018; registration starts at 1:00 pm with step-off at 2:00 p.m. from the historic Second Presbyterian Church at 1936 S. Michigan Avenue. The goal this year is to raise over $50,000; this will bring the total funds raised by the Chicago CROP Walk to $1.7 million dollars. 25% of the funds we raise will used here to benefit the following local programs: A Just Harvest, Lakeview Pantry, The Episcopal Hunger Committee, South Loop Campus Ministry and Second Presbyterian. So, let’s get a team together!

Pilgrim’s Card Ministry - If you have cards you would like to donate to Pilgrim’s Card Ministry, please give them to Michael Haisler. They will be sent to those with birthdays and anniversaries, those in need, in our prayers, or those who just need cheering up. They can be left in his mailbox in the Narthex. Thank you!
2018 Mortgage Campaign - We are using the account formally known as the Growing Forward Capital Campaign to continue to pay our monthly mortgage bill of $2,048. The 2018 Mortgage Campaign Giving is falling short of what is needed to pay the monthly bill. Thank you to everyone who is giving one time or monthly automatic contributions to the current 2018 Mortgage Campaign. We invite those who have not had a chance to give to this campaign to make a donation via check, with the memo saying "2018 Mortgage Campaign," or go to the giving page at and set up a monthly automatic payment. Thank you!

Windows Into Our Future - There are 30 classroom windows which face west along the alley. They are old, they are not energy/cost efficient, and they provide no sound proofing. We have set a goal to raise $85,000 in the next 10 months, and our appeal is to both school families and church members. We have raised $34,000 so far. We encourage both one-time donations and on-going monthly donations to this campaign over the coming 12 months. To give, visit and if you have any questions, please contact the school office at

Gift Cards - As of today, the normal Gift Card schedule begins. With the exception of Labor Day when cards are sold on Tuesday, cards will be sold on Sunday in the church foyer at 11:30 a.m. and Monday and Friday in the school office from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Order forms are on the table in the church narthex and in the school office. Please contact Anne Barsano 312-972-9040 or with orders or questions. Remember, cards can be used to purchase other items, such as gas and groceries, in addition to using them as presents. Let's have a really great year of sales!

Want to keep up-to-date on what happens at the Church Council Meetings? Copies of the meeting minutes from Tuesday, May 29th, are available on the table at the back of the church. Thank You to our Council Secretary, Kori Gilbert, for making this available for our members!
