Dear Friends,

This week in worship at 9:30 a.m., we will hear the Word the apostle Paul received from God in a dark hour of his life: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

At last week’s ELCA Youth Gathering, over 30.000 youth heard from a young man named Will Starkweather. He had struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide for much of his life. He found a church, then divulged his secret to the pastor. “Pastor Carla listened and then she also said four words: There’s grace for that,” Starkweather said.

“Y’all, those words changed my life.”

Starkweather went on to become an ELCA pastor. Acknowledging the hurt and pain that resides in each of us, Starkweather told all who were gathered, “We are all recovering from something—and there is grace for that.”

After concluding a powerful testimony to a standing ovation, Starkweather greeted friends behind the stage. From his talk, he wanted people to take home with them that there is “no such thing as ‘too broken.’ Our broken places are where God brings out beauty.”

Join us as we gather in grace and beauty this Sunday at 9:30 a.m.!

Why Stewardship? is a thoughtful 90 minute, interactive learning event (in person or online). We’ll begin with stewardship shaped by the “why”: God’s dream that our lives and our world would be healthy and flourish! Then the “what” and the “how.” It will be led by Steve Oelschlager on Wednesday, August 15th, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Pilgrim. He is the stewardship program coordinator for the ELCA and is energized by ideas about life, faith, religion, and money. He hopes to be a teacher and leader of life-giving change through his work. Come join us for what is sure to be an educational evening.

"Fun Summer Bible Stories" is an interactive, mini Sunday School experience for children aged 3-11 that will take place each Sunday during coffee hour after 9:30 a.m. worship during the summer. It was the confirmation students idea to do this! It especially makes sense to do this during the summer when Sunday School takes a break. To sign up to help, click here:

Women’s Bible Study—Please join us on Wednesday, July 11th. We are using the book and study guide titled Grace by Max Lucado. There are still a couple extra copies available. We gather at Renee Stuedemann’s home for light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and begin at 7:00 p.m. To RSVP or get the books, contact

Prayer Time—We invite you to join us Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at the Parsonage for a time of prayer... it is so renewing!
2018 Block Party—September 16, 2018 is coming fast! Each fall, Pilgrim throws a unifying party for our church, school, school alumni, hot meals guests, and neighbors. Our next planning meeting will be Thursday, July 19th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Parlor. Contact Sarah Lau if you are interested in helping at

Summer Challenge—Jesus with me! In the back of the church, you will find a cardstock half sheet image of Jesus. To celebrate the various ways Jesus accompanies us this summer, we invite you to: 1. Take Jesus with you this summer! Color it, make it your own! 2. Take a picture with Jesus wherever you are, with whoever you’re with, doing whatever activity, trip, or service. 3. Upload them to Facebook or Twitter at #pilgrimJesus2018 or send them to: 4. Prizes will be given in the fall to the 10 best pictures! And then we’ll enjoy a slideshow in church!

Pray for our El Salvador Mission Team!We lift up our Pilgrim El Salvador Team as they prepare to experience life, faith, struggle, and hope in El Salvador July 31- August 7. We are so blessed by your prayers and support. Our team members will be installing solar panels, serving food to the hungry, participating in medical campaigns, supporting new churches, serving internal refugees, visiting our sister school (Colegio Luterano) and marching in a prayer march with 3,000 other people from El Salvador and all over the world! Thank you to Michael, Be, and Trella Marinelli, Tonya Saiki, Alicia Figueroa, Scott Russell, Renee Stuedemann, Kristian, Anna-Kari, Hope, Emanuel, and Xavier Johnson, Beck Anstee, Camryn Stewart, Vince Costello, Kenya Fulton, Gerald Butsky, Korrie Cassata, and Michael Haisler, for representing Pilgrim in such an inspiring way!

Pilgrim’s Card Ministry—If you have cards you would like to donate to Pilgrim’s Card Ministry, please give them to Michael Haisler. They will be sent to those in need, or those we are praying for, or those who just need cheering up. They can be left in his mailbox in the Narthex. Thank you!
Tuition Assistance Appeal—The time has come to lift up among Pilgrim families, members, friends and alumni our Tuition Assistance Campaign for the 2018-19 school year. In our mission to provide academic excellence with a heart, Pilgrim is blessed with many gifts from many people. We invite you to help us extend the gift of a Pilgrim education to more students! Please visit our Vanco giving page or write a check to Pilgrim and write ”Tuition Assistance” on the Memo Line. Thank you!

2018 Mortgage Campaign—We are using the account formally known as the Growing Forward Capital Campaign to continue to pay our monthly mortgage bill of $2,048. The 2018 Mortgage Campaign Giving is falling short of what is needed to pay the monthly bill. Thank you to everyone who is giving one time or monthly automatic contributions to the current 2018 Mortgage Campaign. We invite those who have not had a chance to give to this campaign to make a donation via check, with the memo saying "2018 Mortgage Campaign," or go to the giving page at and set up a monthly automatic payment. Thank you!

Windows Into Our Future—There are 30 classroom windows which face west along the alley. They are old, they are not energy/cost efficient, and they provide no sound proofing. We have set a goal to raise $85,000 in the next 11 months, and our appeal is to both school families and church members. We have raised $23,000 so far. We encourage both one-time donations and on-going monthly donations to this campaign over the coming 12 months. To give, visit and if you have any questions, please contact the school office at

Gift Cards—Pilgrim will be selling gift cards on Sundays after the 9:30 a.m. service and in the school office on Mondays from 9:00—10:00 a.m. You may also fill in an order form from the table in the narthex or school office or from the link below.
