Subject: There IS Time

Pilgrim Announcements
January 25, 2014

Dear Friends,

It's easy to say, "I just don't have time."

But when Jesus says, "The time (kairos) has been fulfilled, the Kingdom is near..." (Mark 1:14) our lives are renewed, bringing peace and purpose where there was once only anxiety and unfulfillment.

Join us this Sunday at 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.

Congregational Meeting
Attention Members:  We invite you to help us shape our future! Join us on Sunday, January 25th for our annual meeting as we review ministry accomplishments during 2014 and chart a course forward for 2015.   We will be reviewing our 2015 mission goals and presenting a 2015 January through June budget for approval.
Please ask Council President Greg Otsuka ( or Treasurer Carl Doerfler ( with any questions or concerns.

New Member Classes
What does ‘Lutheran’ mean?  How can Pilgrim help me and my family grow in faith? What does it mean to become a member of Pilgrim?  If you're at all curious about any of these questions, please  explore with us. Membership is done by attending our two-part New Members class.  Part One is offered on the last Thursday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Part Two is offered on the first Sunday of every month from 9:20 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.  This means that the next classes will be on the 29th of January and on the 1st of February.   Please RSVP to

Quilters' & Crafters’ Day
Join us on Sunday, January 25, after the congregational meeting (around 1 p.m.) for an afternoon of sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, or other crafts and fellowship.  Bring a snack or beverage to share, and we'll order dinner (usually approximately $8 per person) late afternoon. Interested in learning to quilt?  Contact Chris Wallis ( for a supply list.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the families who participated in the High School Information Night at Pilgrim. The 12 teens on the panel provided straight-from-the-source information on everything from how to choose a high school to how to juggle homework and extracurriculars. It was awesome to hear from such poised, thoughtful, intelligent and entertaining kids! A special thanks to our panel of recent Pilgrim graduates: Luke Allingham of Amundsen IB; Emma Barnhart of Northside College Prep; Joey Bergren of Jones College Prep; Jack Bergren of Lane Tech; Ryan Harnish of Lincoln Park; Elizabeth Howaniec of Whitney Young; Lila Knapp of Payton College Prep; Elizabeth O'Conor of Northside College Prep; Tonya Saiki of Von Steuben Scholars; Gavin Swartz of DePaul College Prep; Mikaela Uddfolk of Jones College Prep; and Tristan Uddfolk of Lane Tech! Special thanks to Stephanie Zimmermann for so expertly coordinating this event!

Bible Discussion Time: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
First Communion Class– Begins in February
We invite everyone who is in 2nd grade or older to participate in our upcoming First Communion Program, which will be beginning with an Interest meeting on February 4th. The interactive class is focused on helping us grow in our relationship with God. We will cover the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the 10 commandments, and the meaning of the sacraments.
Build Resurrection Broke Ground
After many months of praying, we are overjoyed to announce that construction is beginning on a new sanctuary and ministry center in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Resurrection Lutheran Church is part of the Colegio Luterano Campus, which is Pilgrim’s sister school.  Pastor Anna-Kari Johnson traveled to El Salvador to be there for the ground breaking on Sunday, January 18th. This project continues to be led by Pastor Christian Chavarria, who visited Pilgrim in October of 2013.  Please use this weekend to pray for our brothers and sisters and for the project, which faces more challenges but is underway!

Welcome Pastor Lalissa’s Family!
Thanks to answered prayers and the generosity of all of you, we are welcoming the family of Lutheran Ethiopian Pastor Lalissa Gemechis to Pilgrim!  Pastor Lalissa’s wife, Bilisie, and their son Homey (age 7) and daughter Wada (age 3) have arrived here on Winchester and will be staying with Pastors Kristian and Anna-Kari and family in the Parsonage. Homey and Wada will be attending Pilgrim Lutheran School starting January 20th.  Bilisie will be an active volunteer in our ministry.  Bilisie has been working as a Program Director for Canadian Christian Children’s Fund, overseeing a sponsorship program for 10,000 children in Ethiopia.  Her husband, Pastor Lalissa, is about to become a lead Pastor in one of the fastest growing churches in the World, the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus ( (meaning “the Dwelling Place of Jesus).  They have grown in membership from 22,000 to 6.2 million over the past 50 years.  In order to prepare for this role, he is continuing to pursue a PhD in Missiology at Concordia Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN.
Thank you for receiving this new Pilgrim family with God’s love!

Prayer for this Week
Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service. Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

1 Corinthians 7:29–31 (NRSV)
Paul does not disapprove of marriage or other human social institutions. He does, however, want Christians to live in the present in fervent anticipation of God's future, which even now has dawned through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Gospel - Mark 1:14-20 (NRSV)
Before Jesus calls his first disciples, he proclaims a message that becomes known as "the gospel" or good news from God. God is ready to rule our lives. Those who realize this will respond with repentance and faith.

Gift Cards Update
The Gift Card program exceeded its budgeted income of $6000 by $1000 in 2014 (which was not a particularly good year) with only 25% of all possible church and school families participating!  If we want to reduce our anticipated budget deficit by July 1st, a good way is to increase the number of people who participate in the Gift Card Program and therefore increase our profit!  If we could have 200 families buy $200 worth of grocery, clothing, gas or any other gift cards every month, Pilgrim would earn $24,000 in profit for one year, or $12,000 by June 30th!  Every family participating would spend $200 for $200 worth of gift cards, with no extra cost to them. The Pilgrim Order Form is on the church website under fundraising- maybe you could give it a try! As usual, we sell on the first and last days of the school week in the school office and on Sunday in the church foyer. Contact Anne Barsano for more information.
‘Those 70s Shows’
Groovy Gala & Auction—Mar 7
This week's update from the auction team is all about donations! Donations are what help us make a large portion of profits at the auction event and we really need your help to bulk this up! With the silent auction, we are allowing a much larger group access to bidding and this really helps out Pilgrim when it comes to fundraising.

How can you help? We are asking that each Pilgrim family contribute at least one donation. This could mean soliciting a donation from a business that you love or frequent or making a donation from your family if you feel uncomfortable asking for a donation. Local restaurants, breweries, sporting events, theaters, etc. are great donations that really help us out. We are specifically looking for the following right now- personal service donations (spa, massage, mani-pedi, etc.) and restaurants/local culture/hotel type donations. If you decide to give your donation in the form of a gift card, make sure to see Anne in the office and Pilgrim will get a double benefit from your purchase.

A specific request- if you or someone in your family is a heavy-duty traveler and would be able to donate miles, we are hoping to put together a travel package. Mile donations are tax-deductible and can really help us out with a bigger item! Along the same lines, vacation homes or time shares would be a huge help as well.

To the families who have already donated or solicited donations, thank you!

The deadline for all donations is February 1st!
