Subject: Spirit Led

Pilgrim Announcements
February 22nd, 2015

Dear Friends,

It's been said... "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it."

This may be true... but what if we started moving toward a life that is driven, not by what happens to us, but by what God enacts in us... a Spirit-led life.

Let's explore what it means to driven by the Spirit (Mark 1:12) ...
Join us this Sunday at 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.

Lent at Pilgrim 2015 ‘Living Prayers’
Join us for a wonderful time of growth as we learn to be "Living Prayers" in these 40 days of Lent!

Each Wednesday, we gather at 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. for a community dinner for all ages, followed by an interactive prayer/service activity that will draw us closer to God, to one another, and the world!

This week, join us as we build a simple, yet meaningful "home altar" that you will be able to take with you to your homes.

We also recommend a book for your Lenten Journey: Learning to Pray Again: Peace and Joy Through an Ancient Practice  by Michael Rinehart on, either as an ebook or as a hard copy as we explore being "living Prayers" throughout Lent.

World Day of Prayer Service
Join us for a special and deeply moving "World Day of Prayer" Service on Friday, March 6th at 7 p.m. at Pilgrim.  We will be joining together with members from Luther Memorial Church and others as we engage in a world-wide movement for prayer and peace that originated with a group of prayerful women in France.   It is a very calming and renewing experience!

MOPS is a morning group for moms. Discussions and speakers focus on relevant, important, and interesting topics. MOPS usually meets 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. at 4332 N. Winchester Ave. Join us for the next meeting on March 5th. Childcare available on-site!
Prayer Ministry
Join us for prayer time at the parsonage every Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (4332 N Winchester Ave)
Bible Discussion Time: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
Volunteer Training
The Salvation Army (5020 N. Pulaski) is hosting free Volunteer Training on March 28th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be breakfast and lunch provided. Join us for this invaluable training designed to equip volunteers from churches, community groups, and local businesses to work with vulnerable seniors and caregivers in the community! Includes training from well-known gerontology experts in the field.
Confronting Pharaoh Training
We pray every week: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…” But how can we live that prayer? Many of us are blessed to give money to charity, but what if we could do something more. What if we could let our lives, not just our money, be part of the solution to a safer and more just city?
Join us for a two part training called “Confronting Pharaoh” that is rooted in our Christian faith and located right here in our neighborhood!
  • When: Part 1:  Sunday, February 22 from 1-4pm, Part 2:  Sunday, March 22nd from 1-4 p.m.
  • Where: Ravenswood UCC (2050 W. Pensacola Ave, Chicago)
These trainings will be lead by Community Renewal Society For more information contact: Ryan Wallace, (312) 673-3852

Consider an Offering to Hot Meals
The increase in guests to the hot meals has led to increased expenses for food and supplies (not for the volunteers… they work for free) Currently, our Hot Meals fund is in the red. This ministry makes such a big impact and touches so many hundreds of lives every month!  So if you would like to make a special offering to Hot Meals, please go to and in the “other” box, type “Hot Meals” and then indicate the amount you would like to give.

Hot Meals PLUS is still in need of drivers to deliver hot meals to shut-ins on Saturdays.  E-mail Janet Taylor at or call at 773-777-4052 for more information.  Thank you.
First Sunday, Feed the Hungry
Did you know that on the first Sunday of each month our ushers take a special collection of donations in support of local and world efforts to feed the hungry? Whether you want to support the Pilgrim Saturday Hotmeals program or one of several other worthy missions, you can join in. We invite you to use the special envelopes provided in each pew, check off one of the designated missions listed, enclose your donation of any amount, take the envelope with you when you go for communion and simply hand the envelope to the usher.
Prayer for this Week
Almighty God, the resplendent light of your truth shines from the mountaintop into our hearts. Transfigure us by your beloved Son, and illumine the world with your image, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Genesis 9:8–17 (NRSV)
Today's reading is the conclusion to the flood story. Because of human sin, the Lord destroys the earth by flood, saving only Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark. Yet divine destruction gives way to divine commitment. As in the first creation, God blesses humanity and establishes a covenant with all creatures.

1 Peter 3:18–22 (NRSV)
As God acted through Christ's suffering and death to bring us to God, so God acts through baptism to save us from a sinful existence. This spiritual cleansing marks our new life in Christ.

Mark 1:9–15 (NRSV)
The Spirit that comes upon Jesus at his baptism sustains him when he is tested by Satan so that he might proclaim the good news of God's reign.
