Dear Friends,

Are you looking for some hope amid all the bad news?
Are you looking for connection amid a world trying to pit us against each other?
How about some refreshment (Philemon v. 20) before entering the fall schedule?

Join us for worship this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. (last week of 9:30 summer schedule), or on some upcoming Sunday, because at Pilgrim, the Spirit is showing up to refresh our individual and collective souls.

This week, we explore the extraordinary plot behind Paul's letter to Philemon... will someone important to both of them (Onesimus) be freed, or stay a slave?

See you soon, and may those of you who are traveling stay safe!
New Worship Schedule starts on September 11th

March in the Von Steuben Day Parade on September 10—We are inviting the Pilgrim Community to come out to the Von Steuben Day German Parade on Saturday, September 11th to march in this wonderful community event. Let's show our pride in Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School. Please meet at the North Center CVS at 1:25 p.m. The parade usually ends around 3 p.m. in Lincoln Square. If you need more information or have any questions please contact Pastor Kristian at or Principal Comella at Thanks and we hope to have a huge turnout!!!
Sunday School News—We have a new and improved format for Sunday School. Beginning next week during the 10:30 service, all kids will remain in church through the Children's Time, followed by dismissal to nursery for the youngest, or Sunday School for kids from pre-school through Grade 5. There will be time allotted for music and/or drama rehearsals on some Sundays, and designated Sundays during which the children will remain and participate in the worship service. We're experimenting with holding Sunday School in the Annex and Maring Hall to accommodate these changes. Parents will continue to pick up children from the nursery during the Peace, and the Sunday School kids will be brought to the narthex during the same time.
On September 18, since there will be only one service at 10:00 a.m., we'll offer Sunday School in the sanctuary at 9:15. This will include lesson time and learning some songs to be sung during the service. So parents, if you need child care while you are helping set up for the Block Party, bring your age 3 and older children to Sunday School.
Regular Sunday School will resume during the 10:30 service on September 25.

Sunday School Begins Next Sunday—Sunday School will resume on Sunday, September 11, during the 10:30 service. Thank you to all the new and returning teachers that are teaming up to provide a quality experience for kids aged pre-school through Grade 5. The program is very user friendly and no prior teaching experience required, just a willingness to share God's word with his children. If you wish to help, please contact Chris Wallis at or 773-561-5419.
Welcome, Patrick!—Today, we welcome our new Seminarian Patrick Freund to Pilgrim. Patrick is a student at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in Hyde Park and is pursuing a Masters of Divinity.   He is from Richmond, Virginia and is really looking forward to being at Pilgrim. Breadbakers needed—If you can follow a simple recipe and are willing to bake communion bread once or twice over a four-month period, please contact Chris Wallis (
Pilgrim has safe drinking water! Just in time for the school year, we have received the results from testing our drinking water and it meets the United States EPA Action Level of less than 15 PPb. The sinks in the schoolrooms, the drinking fountains and kitchen were all tested for lead.
