Pilgrim Update

Guest Pastor This Sunday
This Sunday, we welcome Pastor Paula Stecker as our preacher!  She and her husband, Carl, raised their daughters as they served as missionary nurses in Central Africa. After returning home and studying at LSTC, she was ordained and served in Pennsylvania and in Haiti. They have come to Chicago as Carl serves the ELCA as Director of Global Diakonia(international development and disaster response). Pastor Paula is working to help our congregations increase their capacity for intercultural communication.

Wrigleyville Summerfest
It’s summer in Chicago, which means two things on weekends - worship and street fests! Join Resurrection Lutheran Church (with Interim Pastor Bill Hutchison) as we present our 12th annual Wrigleyville Summerfest with great bands, great food, even better drinks, and the best Kid’s Zone around on Saturday, Aug 2 (noon-10pm) and Sunday, August 3 (noon-9pm)! Fest proceeds support the church and our preschool, the ELCA Metro Chicago Synod, Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, The Night Ministry, and Lakeview Pantry. You can also follow the Fest on twitter and Facebook. Cheers!

Giving a Gift to All of our Children Thank you to those who may have contributed to the Dave Maring School Endowment Fund. This Congregation has established this fund with a vision that when fully funded, income from the Fund is going to provide scholarship aid and seed money for new programs at Pilgrim. We currently have a matching grant challenge from a member of the congregation. We need to raise $25,000 and the donor will match it. Please help if you can. Donations are being accepted via the Pilgrim webpage.

Please join us in praying for Brian, Cathy, Erik, Jocelyn, and Abby Basler, Kristian, Anna-Kari, Hope, Emanuel, and Xavier Johnson, Jean Carroll, Anne Meyers, Andrea Preston, Scott Russell, Ralph Maffucci, and Cheryl and Tonya Saiki. Our Prayer for Sunday
Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness, and you cover creation with abundance. Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit, and with this food fill all the starving world; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Isaiah 55:1–5;
God invites Israel to a great feast at which both food and drink are free. God also promises to make an everlasting covenant with all the people, with promises that previously had been limited to the line of kings. As David was a witness to the nations, these nations shall now acknowledge the ways in which God has glorified Israel.

The second reading is Romans 9:1–5;
This begins a new section in Paul's letter in which he will deal with the place of Israel in God's saving plan. He opens by highlighting how Israel's heritage and legacy include being God's children, having God's covenants, being given God's law, participating in worship of God, and receiving divine promises.

The Gospel reading is Matthew 14:13–21;
After John the Baptist is murdered, Jesus desires a time of solitude. Still, his compassion for others will not allow him to dismiss those who need him, and he is moved to perform one of his greatest miracles.
