Pilgrim Announcements
November 13, 2015

Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday as we welcome Seminary student Marissa Becklin as our preacher. Your presence will be key as we seek to live out a verse from this Sunday's readings, Hebrews 10:24: "And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds..." See you at 8 am or 10:30 am!
This Sunday, we welcome Seminarian Marissa Becklin as our preacher. Marissa was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa where her faith has been nurtured since birth in a medium-sized Lutheran congregation. She graduated in 2014 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where she double-majored in Religion and Psychology and met the love of her life, Hans, who shared a love for hymns and bad puns. Marissa enjoys playing the saxophone and piano, writing, biking, drinking coffee, watching PBS, and reading. She is a second year student in the M. Div program at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) and is a candidate for ordained ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. (ELCA)

Dear Pilgrim Community:
Last year, on Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, I organized a mitten making day for those in need. We then distributed them among people living under Lake Shore Drive. It was very well received and appreciated. This year, I was hoping to include the Pilgrim Church and School community as we make more mittens to warm those who are living without shelter.
You can help in three ways:
1) Come on Thursay, November 19th, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the 7th & 8th grade class will be cutting wool and assembling sewing kits, to be assembled at a later date. I would like to invite you, as a community, to join in cutting these shrunken old wool sweaters. No need to RSVP, just come!
2) Drop off packages of handwarmers (can be purchased in bulk at Costco), buttons, shrunken 100% wool sweaters or fleece to be used as materials in the school office. Everything helps.
3) Mitten Assembly At a later date TBD, we will be assembling the mittens. On that day, we will need volunteers and some sewing machines that we could borrow for a couple hours. Please email me your interest for sewing or if you have a sewing machine you would like to loan for the day. Thank you in advance- school parent Jennifer Goolsby at

Mission Gifts Update:At their August meeting, the Pilgrim Lutheran Church Council reviewed the recommendation
of the Mission Gift Committee re: recipients of Mission Gift funds, and approved it. The total amount of Mission Gift Funds approved came to $9790 (out of the balance of $9985 in Mission Gift Funds remaining from the Forward in Faith Capital Campaign.) The grants are as follows:
ELCA/Good Gifts - $300 for two Ambulance Bikes and $400 for School Supplies
El Salvador Solar Team - $2360 for Materials needed to bring Electricity to 10 more rural homes Two Projects of the Hope House Homeless Shelter /Lutheran Church of El Salvador

Luther North College Prep - $2000 for Tuition Assistance.
You will be hearing more about these projects soon. We are inviting representatives of the recipient organizations to come to worship with us at Pilgrim at which time they can receive their checks and tell us more about the work they are doing. (See Save the Dates below.) Meanwhile, thank you for your generous support of the Capital Campaign, 10% of which goes toward Mission Gifts. And, since congregational input is essential to this process, please continue to think of organizations and projects that would be worthy recipients of future Mission Gift funds and submit applications on their behalf. Applications are accepted at any time and considered quarterly by the Mission Gift Committee. Application forms can be found on the table in the church narthex.

Coffee Hour Spots Open!
Thank you to those who have responded to the invitation to serve as a co-host our coffee hour rotation.  In order to keep coffee hour open each week, we need 13 coffee hour teams, because each team is called upon to serve 4 times a year.  Each team is comprised at least two people or families.  Right now, 10 teams are full, and three teams are in need of another person or family.   Please consider joining one of the three teams who are short so we can continue having coffee hour each week.
Duties of coffee hour servers are: to make coffee (which is provided) before service, purchase or make a variety of snacks and juices for people to enjoy and set out the plates and cups (which are also provided).  Monies collected can be donated to a cause the team supports or kept by the team for their own reimbursement.  Cakes are provided by Pilgrim for special occasions.  If you think that you could help us out, please contact Anne Barsano The coffee hour schedule is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex.  Would you please check out the dates which need help and let Anne or the person listed know that you would like to help that Sunday.  Coffee hour is too good a thing to lose!!

First Sunday, Feed the Hungry
Did you know that on the first Sunday of each month, our ushers take a special collection of donations in support of local and world efforts to feed the hungry? Whether you want to support the Pilgrim Saturday Hotmeals program or one of several other worthy missions, you can join in. Next Sunday in worship, we invite you to use the special envelopes provided in each pew, check off one of the designated missions listed, enclose your donation of any amount, take the envelope with you when you go for communion and simply hand the envelope to the usher.
Gift Cards—In anticipation of the holidays we have added some new gift cards to our list: Baker’s Square $25, American Express $50, $100 and $250 (already activated), $25, Nordstrom $25 and $100 and Spa Week $25. Unfortuantely we no longer carry KFC, Red Box or Eddie Bauer. Sif you can’t decide which gift card to give someone, why not purchase a Paper Certificate for Gift Card in any amount and let the recipient choose from our list. Please contact Anne Barsano at or 312-972-9040 with questions. Thank You!
