Dear Friends,

There is a job opening at Pilgrim... but that's not the opening I'm talking about...

In the most dramatic moments in this Sunday's Gospel, a Gentile woman opens Jesus to a whole new realm of relationship... and Jesus opens the ears of the deaf man with the ancient word, "Ephphatha", which of course means, "Be opened."

This is our challenge and our joy in life... to receive the "opening" God has for us... let's discover this together this Sunday at 9:30 a.m.!

Pilgrim Fest!
Mark your Calendars and make plans to celebrate life and Pilgrim on Sunday, September 13th for our annual “Pilgrim Fest” Block Party - sponsored by Thrivent Financial.  We will begin with an outdoor worship service at 10 a.m., followed by  food, live music, entertainment, kids activities, and fun to go around for people of all ages!   Please look for further announcements with volunteer opportunities to make this day a success!   During the 10 a.m service, we will be officially installing our Pilgrim School Staff!  A special thank you to Shellie Riedle and Anne Barsano and the In-reach Committee for bringing this together!
March with Pilgrim in the Von Steuben Day Parade
We are inviting the Pilgrim Community to come out to the Von Steuben Day German Parade on Saturday, September 12th to march in this wonderful community event. Let's show our pride in Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School.  Please meet at the North Center CVS at 1:15 p.m. The parade usually ends around 3 p.m. in Lincoln Square.

Sunday School Begins!  Sunday, September 13th
Calling all children!  Join us on Sunday, September 13th for a Kick Off to our Fall Sunday School Program at 9:15 a.m. right before the block party.  We will have activities and crafts and a bible lesson to get our kids ready for the big day!
MOPS is a morning group for moms and is back to our regular meeting schedule for September! On September 17th, writer and speaker Becky Bedouin will join us to talk about food!  She is going to discuss the family dinner, tips for making prep/cooking easier, ways for kids to help in the kitchen, and even sharing some of her recipes.  Our meetings are at the parsonage at 4332 N Winchester.  Doors open at 9 am and childcare is provided until 11:45 a.m.  Cost is $10.  If you would like more information or to RSVP, please contact Tarah Dickerson at

Need Help with the Block Party!
Pilgrim is looking for salads, desserts and cakes for the Cake Walk for our Block Party on September 13th. Please look for the sign-up sheets around the church and school or volunteer online - click HERE
Luggage Drive for UCAN 
During the month of September, as part of this fall's "Season of Service" project, we are having a Luggage Drive for UCAN.  (  UCAN's mission is to support youth who have suffered trauma from abuse or neglect.  The luggage is needed for when the children are moved to foster care.  New and lightly used luggage and duffle bag donations can be placed on the north west wall of the narthex underneath the bulletin boards.  Profits from the block party, along with matching funds from Thrivent (THANK YOU!) , will be donated to UCAN's Youth Starter Kit/Essentials Programs. Thank you for your participation and generosity!

Your Legacy: Family, Church, Charity
Join us for any part of a three week seminar:  "Your Legacy:  Family, Church, Charity" Sunday, September 20th, 27th, and October 4th at 9:15 a.m. in Maring Hall.   Would you like to help sustain ministry for generations to come?  Or your alma mater's endowment fund?  How does one go about leaving an inheritance?  It doesn't matter if you're a Midwestern farmer, a Pacific coast fisherman, or a Southern Belle.  If there are people or causes you care about, we can help you uncover ways to enrich their futures and unleash your generosity.   Join us for a series of presentations inspired by the Scriptures that will invite you to pray about your legacy and develop a strategy to help ensure your legacy lives on. 
Pillowcase Dresses 
Pilgrim teacher Mrs. Raabe is helping us collect pillowcases that are made into dresses for young girls in need. The project is coordinated with the Orphan Grain Train in Nebraska and is in the works at St. Paul Lutheran in Skokie. The congregation's goal is to provide 500 dresses.  We are always in need of more pillowcases; if you would like to donate any new or gently used cases, please bring them to the school office.
Lindsay is Moving!
We need to announce that our fantastic Business Manager, Lindsay Beveridge, is moving to Geneva, IL in a new home she is purchasing with her new husband, Brian, and their beautiful children, Annabelle and Lincoln.   We are sad to lose her from the neighborhood and from her administrative position in the office, but we are happy for them as they celebrate a new beginning for their family.   We will be saying a prayer of appreciation for her on Sunday, October 18th.

Job Opening: Business Manager
This position supports the ministry of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School through important bookkeeping and administrative duties.  The position is 36 hours a week and requires someone with proficiency in accounting practices and Excel, maintaining a general ledger, and with excellent communication and people skills.  Please send resumes by email attachment to

Boxtops For Education 
The boxtops collection program continues at Pilgrim….you can also place your boxtops in the container on the table in the narthex of the church or in the container in the school office.  Join the effort!  All funds raised from the boxtops collection will go to fund Pilgrim Kids Care.  Questions?  Contact Paula Raabe (

Gift Cards are available in the school office Monday and Friday and in the church foyer on Sunday. If you don't have the time to stop into the school office you can send an order with your child and the cards will go home the next selling day (you will be sent an email regarding your order). Thanks for making Pilgrim better!
Many thanks to the Pilgrim Properties Committee Chair Jim Volkens and to the Playground Committee headed up by school parent Tricia Koning Llewellyn and school parents Mindy Wieland and Chad Smith. Over the summer we have put on a new roof on the school, laid new carpet in the classrooms and completed Phase I of the Pilgrim Playground Renovation Project. Thanks are also due to Dave Emery, Pilgrim's Facilities Manager, and to the whole Pilgrim congregation for your contributions to the Capital Campaign. 

Magazine Drive order forms will go out soon and are due back the first week in October.  Paper orders may be put in the box in the school office or you may go online to order.
