Partnership with CLEF Nets Pilgrim Security Upgrades—The Chicagoland Lutheran Education Foundation (CLEF) has announced that Pilgrim is receiving $55K of a grant from a private foundation for security upgrades in CLEF schools. Improvements Work on these projects should happen in August before the start of school and have minimal impact on Pilgrim’s daily operations. Many thanks to CLEF for continued support of the safety and well-being of our day school students!

Greater Chicago Great Banquet Retreats—The Great Banquet is an experience of God’s grace, beginning Thursday evening and ending Sunday evening. Guests grow in their relationship with God through fellowship with a wonderful community of disciples. The Men’s Weekend is September 22-25 and the Women’s weekend is September 29-October 2. Wednesday, August 31—Tending to our Souls in Emotional Times—We are in a difficult and anxious moment in our nation's history.  Amidst the violence, fear, and
mistrust, how do we tend to our souls? And what can we do about the suffering we see in the world? We invite you to join Dr. Bianka Hardin and Pastor Johnson for reflection and discussion on these two questions. Our initial conversation will be 8/31 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parlor. Elizabeth Eaton of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has issued a statement with her thoughts and some resources that can be found here:

Prayer TimeWe invite you to join us Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at the Parsonage for a time of prayer... it is so renewing!
March in the Von Steuben Day Parade on September 10—We are inviting the Pilgrim Community to come out to the Von Steuben Day German Parade on Saturday, September 11th to march in this wonderful community event. Let's show our pride in Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School. Please meet at the North Center CVS at 1:25 p.m. The parade usually ends around 3 p.m. in Lincoln Square. Block Party Team Forming—As you all know, our annual block party is a wonderful event that helps draw the Pilgrim community together (Hot Meals/School/Worship Community/Neighborhood) and is a great way to embody our mission to gather, prepare, and send. 5K Walk to End Alzheimer’s—Join the fun, raise money and make a difference on September 25, starting at Montrose Harbor at 10:00 a.m. Gather your friends and form a team! They hope to raise $1.2 million to work towards finding a cure for Alzheimer’s. Register at

Do you have any books you would like to donate? We would like to offer the hot meals patrons and Sunday morning visitors the opportunity to take/have a used book to read. We will use the hard cover books for this program and donate paper backs to the Veterans Hospital. If you have any books you would like to donate, please put them on the counter in the annex (the room off of Maring Hall). If you have any questions, please contact Deb Suhajda. Thanks for your help!
Hospice Volunteer Opportunities—Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care serves the six county Chicagoland area, Elgin, Aurora and Joliet areas. Volunteers participate in a wide variety of activities  and they are specifically looking for Patient Care Friendly Visitors (4 hrs/wk) and Pet Therapy Volunteers (4 hrs/wk). THANK YOU to some AMAZING people! Many thanks to the Pilgrim Properties Committee Chair Jim Volkens, who has dedicated countless hours to our many property projects this summer. Thank you to the Playground Committee headed up by school parent Tricia Koning Llewellyn as our playdeck is being redone. Special acknowledgement to Chad Smith and Mindy Wieland, parent volunteer architects, and John Llewelyn as well for all his help. Kudos to Michael, Antonella, Florenzo, and Milena Garbo and to Jim, Shellie, Nathan, and Amelia Volkens for removing all the equipment from the playdeck in the heat of summer. We are also thankful to Jack Phillips, who has coordinated all the security upgrades through the generosity of CLEF. Thanks are also due to Dave Emery, Pilgrim's Facilities Manager, and to the whole Pilgrim congregation for your contributions to the Capital Campaign.
Operation CIP's gift card program’s—hours are Sunday after church (10:30
am) and Monday from 8:30 to 10 am in the school office. To avoid the hot weather why don't you pick up some AMC or Regal movie tickets in $10 or $25 and enjoy the cool theater! For your trips in the heat you can get some Dairy Queen, Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins or Starbucks cards! Don't want to cook! Buy Lou Malnati or other restaurant cards and either go to the restaurant or order for delivery and pay with the cards!! Contact Anne at or 312-972-9040 or to order and arrange for pickup.

Tuition Assistance Appeal—The time has come to lift up our Tuition Assistance Fund among Pilgrim families, members, friends and alumni for the 2016-17 school- year. In our mission to provide academic excellence with a heart, many of us choose to make a donation to the Tuition Assistance Fund to provide the blessing of a Pilgrim education to students that otherwise would not be able to afford it. Checks can be made out to "Pilgrim Lutheran School" with the memo line saying "Tuition Assitance", or you can visit
