Christmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.

For these reasons, we are holding a “Blue Christmas” Prayer Service on Saturday, December 21st at 8:30 a.m. at the Parsonage, 4332 N. Winchester Ave., Chicago, IL 60613.

Come join us in hearing prayers, scripture, and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it) is welcome.

C.S. Lewis Advent Devotionals Available
Please stop by the back table in the sanctuary to pick up a free advent devotional, “A World Awaits” by C.S. Lewis. As a young man, C.S. Lewis considered himself an atheist, far too logical and clear-headed to ever believe in something so fanciful as the Incarnation of God in human form. But when a powerful conversion experience took over, Lewis became one of the foremost defenders of Christianity, without ever losing his preference for clear and logical thinking. Follow Lewis in this booklet of daily Advent reflections, and your celebration of Christmas will never be the same.

Our Prayer for Sunday
O God, our true life, to serve you is freedom, and to know you is unending joy. We worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you for your great glory. Abide with us, reign in us, and make this world into a fit habitation for your divine majesty, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Isaiah 11:1–10In today's reading the prophet describes the ideal ruler who will come in the future as a green shoot springing from a dead stump (David's royal line) of Jesse (David's father). Gifted by the Spirit, this messiah will seek justice for the poor, and the reign of this monarch will be experienced as paradise regained.

The second reading is Romans 15:4–13God's promise to include Gentiles within the circle of God's blessed people has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Christians live out their unity by welcoming and encouraging each other just as Christ has welcomed them into God's family.

The Gospel reading is Matthew 3:1–12:  Just before Jesus begins his public ministry, John the Baptist appears, calling people to mend their ways and speaking of a powerful one who is to come.
