Subject: It's Actually a Good Thing

Pilgrim Announcements
February 8th, 2015

Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the blessings this snowstorm has brought us (yes, really!)

It's surprising what we find when we walk through the door of faith and discover the grace God has prepared for us! See you Sunday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.!

"And the whole city was gathered around the door... And he cured many who were sick." Mark 1:33-34

A big thank you to all of the Pilgrim students and teachers who have worked tirelessly to make hundreds of Valentines for our community.

Lenten Soup Suppers
We're looking for volunteers to prepare a simple meal for 30-40 people on Wednesdays during Lent.  And no, it doesn't have to be soup!  We have teams for February 18th and 25th, but still need people for March 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.  If you'd like to help, either by organizing a team or serving on one, please contact Chris Wallis ( or sign up after the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday.

First Communion Class– Begins February 18th
We invite everyone who is in 2nd grade or older to participate in our upcoming First Communion Program, which will be February 18th at 5:30 p.m. The interactive class is focused on helping us grow in our relationship with God. We will cover the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, the 10 commandments, and the meaning of the sacraments.
Confronting Pharaoh Training
We pray every week: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…” But how can we live that prayer? Many of us are blessed to give money to charity, but what if we could do something more. What if we could let our lives, not just our money, be part of the solution to a safer and more just city?
Join us for a two part training called “Confronting Pharaoh” that is rooted in our Christian faith and located right here in our neighborhood!
  • When: Part 1:  Sunday, February 22 from 1-4pm, Part 2:  Sunday, March 22nd from 1-4 p.m.
  • Where: Ravenswood UCC (2050 W. Pensacola Ave, Chicago)
These trainings will be lead by Community Renewal Society For more information contact: Ryan Wallace, (312) 673-3852

MOPS is a morning group for moms. Discussions and speakers focus on relevant, important, and interesting topics. MOPS usually meets 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. at 4332 N. Winchester Ave. Join us for the next meeting on February 19th. Childcare available on-site!
Consider an Offering to Hot Meals
The increase in guests to the hot meals has led to increased expenses for food and supplies (not for the volunteers… they work for free) Currently, our Hot Meals fund is in the red. This ministry makes such a big impact and touches so many hundreds of lives every month!  So if you would like to make a special offering to Hot Meals, please go to and in the “other” box, type “Hot Meals” and then indicate the amount you would like to give.

Prayer for this Week
Everlasting God, you give strength to the weak and power to the faint. Make us agents of your healing and wholeness, that your good news may be made known to the ends of your creation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Isaiah 40:21–31 (NRSV)
The Judeans in exile have a good reason to be hopeful: the one who will bring them to freedom is the God who created the world, the God who subdues the rulers of the earth and gives strength to those who are weary.

1 Corinthians 9:16-23 (NRSV)
God entrusted Paul with the responsibility of bringing the gospel to diverse people. Hence the focus of Paul's ministry is not his own rights or privileges as an apostle but the privilege of serving God by freely sharing the good news of Christ with others.

Gospel - Mark 1:29-39 (NRSV)
Everywhere Jesus goes, many people expect him to set them free from oppression. Everywhere he goes, he heals them and sets them free. Disease, devils, and death are running for their lives. The forces that diminish human life are rendered powerless by Jesus.
