Subject: "Is God still speaking?... If so, how do we hear from God?"

Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. as we celebrate "Youth Sunday" and highlight our proposed core practice of "Grow in Prayer and the Word." Pastor Kristian's message will be exploring the questions "Is God still speaking?... If so, how do we hear from God?"

We invite you to bring your Bibles to worship because we will be saying a special prayer to bless each Bible during the service.

See you Sunday!
Ice Cream Social

We’ll be celebrating on Thursday, July 25th, from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Weather permitting, we’ll be outside in the playlot—the fun will move indoors to Maring Hall if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Please RSVP by Tuesday, July 23rd.
Pilgrim School Needs a
Choral Music Teacher/Director
Responsibilities include: 1 hour/week of Introduction to Choral Singing for 4th Grade; 1 hour/week of Advanced Choral Singing for 5th-6th Grade and 1 hour/week for 7th-8th Grade; plus, 1 hour/week of prep time. Students learn music reading, sight-singing and the fundamentals of good musicianship. Student performances may include weekly chapel service on Wednesday mornings, Christmas service, and a Spring Concert. The choral music teacher may also need to be present for special occasions (select evening services and Sunday services) to help lead the choir in an offering of music. Other performance opportunities may be service project(s) and/or school musical production(s). Teacher must maintain student discipline and grades. The choral music teacher works to maximize the contribution of any and all singers who participate.

Inquiries: send a resume and supporting materials electronically to Mr. Chris Comella, Pilgrim Principal, at or call 773-477-4824.

Dining Group at Delicias Brianna
The Dining Group will be going to Delicias Brianna, 4911 N. Western Avenue, on July 21st at 5:30pm to get a taste of El Salvadoran food before the trip in August. It is BYOB. Please let Julie Lea know if you plan to attend as the restaurant is small, 773-764-3140. Thanks!
El Salvador Solar Energy Project
Thank you to everyone who has given so generously to this project! Thanks to Ralph Maffucci and Scott Russell, who have come up with a prototype solar energy system that could bring electrical power to rural homes in El Salvador. We are still trying to raise the necessary funds to obtain and transport the materials we need to bring power to 8 homes in the villages of the Guazapa region of El Salvador. If anyone would like to give to this project, please make a check out to Pilgrim Lutheran Church, with “solar El Salvador” in the memo line. Thank you.
Market Day in the Summer!
90 Market Day products are now available at 8 Gordon Food Service Stores in Illinois and Wisconsin. The closest one to Pilgrim is located at 50 Golf Mill Center in Niles (behind the Golf Mill theater). A list of other stores is on the table in the back of the church. Pilgrim's account is 4593; we earn 5% on Market Day products and 1% on all other items.
Gift Cards for Your Vacation
Before you leave on your summer travels, check out  he gas and restaurant gift cards Pilgrim carries. We also can order hotels cards with a one or two week notice. Next year we will have a reduction of cards kept on hand as it is not worth our time counting inventory for unused cards. Even though the cards never expire (with the exception of Visa cards) we would prefer to put the money into regularly purchased gift cards. If you plan to buy cards on a weekly or monthly basis, please let Anne Barsano ( or 773-472-6037 or ) know so we will have them when you want them.

A message from our New Principal:
Setting off on a journey must be a familiar theme at a school and a church called “Pilgrim.” Coming to the principalship at such a lively and successful school as Pilgrim, I am excited by the blessing of joining my journey to those of the students, their families, the staff and the congregation.

As I join my way to Pilgrim’s journey, I fully trust that we can accomplish all our goals for the children at Pilgrim School if we stay firm in the faith that God will continue to help us along our journey. At Ebenezer Lutheran, where I am a member, we recall that Samuel erected a stone “and called its name Ebenezer, for he said, ‘Hitherto the Lord has helped us,’” (1 Sam.6: 12). May the Spirit continue to work through you and through me to ensure the success of our students in an even greater way than Samuel experienced on his journey! I look forward to meeting each of you and working with the teachers, staff, and, most importantly, the children of Pilgrim Lutheran. If you have any questions or thoughts for me—either about from where I have come, about my current vision, or about what I hope our future outcomes might be—please feel free to contact me at school. I have my walking shoes on and I am ready to move forward with all of you!

El Salvador Trip
Thank you to those people connected to Pilgrim’s community that will be participating in this year’s mission trip to El Salvador: Renee Stuedemann, Ralph Maffucci, Scott Russell, Alex Bologna, Jean Carroll, Ann Carroll, Corie Sparlin, Pastors Anna-Kari and Kristian, Hope, Emanuel, and Xavier Johnson. We are thankful for the many ways they will experience God’s presence in El Salvador, and we look forward to commissioning them with a special sending prayer at our service on July 28th.
Hospital/Health Concerns
From Pastor Kristian: I am thankful to be your Pastor. I am grateful when people let me know when there is a health concern or when someone is in the hospital, because it allows me to extend a pastoral visit. Please call me at 773-990-0813 to keep me informed and to let me know when someone is in the hospital or might be in need of Pastoral Care. Thank you!
Pilgrim’s Vision Going Forward
Throughout the summer and fall, we’re going to be exploring the habits the early church adopted in Acts 2. We’re going to be bringing back some of the content and feedback we received through the “40 Days to Shape our Future” during Lent. We’ll be lifting up our proposed mission statement and core practices and how they could be used to shape our future ministry:

July 21st—Grow in prayer and the word: Bring your Bible to church Sunday,
Blessing of the Bibles, Youth Sunday

July 28th—Respond by advocating Justice for the Vulnerable
August 25th—Invest time, talent, and resources generously
September 8th—Lift up Academic Excellence with a Heart
September 15th—(Block party Sunday) Mpower Homes for Faith Formation
September 22nd—Preach on Mission Statement: In Christ's love, we gather, prepare, and send all as leaders for God's mission in the world. (GPS)
Congregational Forum on the Core Values (after service)
September 29thCongregational Meeting to approve core values

Please join us in worship this summer as we reflect on the question: What are the habits are we as Pilgrim going to form as we see the Holy Spirit move within us?

Looking for Alumni!
Pilgrim is once again trying to develop an Alumni association and we are in need of your help. If you are a graduate, parent or grandparent or friend of a graduate and know his or her current address, would you please let Anne Barsano know? If you don't want to divulge the address, then please let the graduate know so that they can send it in to us. Thank you!
Our Prayer for Sunday
Eternal God, you draw near to us in Christ, and you make yourself our guest. Amid the cares of our lives, make us attentive to your presence, that we may treasure your word above all else, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6:
The exiles have returned and rebuilt Jerusalem. Now Ezra, the priest, reads the law of Moses to them in the public square.

The Gospel is Matthew 13:1-23: In Matthew’s gospel, both Jesus and his disciples “sow the seed” of God’s word by proclaiming the good news that “the kingdom of heaven is near”. Now, in a memorable parable, Jesus explains why this good news produces different results in those who hear.
