Subject: G.I.F.T. Launch

Pilgrim Update
A note from Pastor Kristian:

Dear Friends,
Join us this Sunday at 9:15 a.m. as we launch G.I.F.T. - Generations in Faith Together. Through music, stories, and fellowship, we share the Word of God in a fun and meaningful way. G.I.F.T. is an offshoot of our Sunday School ministry, but it is meant for everyone: kids, youth, parents, and adults from the congregation and community. Please come experience a new way of being church this Sunday!

Pastor Kristian
Take The MYT Challenge!
In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells us the parable of the talents. The master gives his servants talents, and expects that they will be multiplied. This Sunday, Pastor Kristian will be giving out 10 gifts of $25 and 5 gifts of $50. The challenge: multiply the gift and bring back the talents on October 27th (Reformation Sunday). Be creative! Let’s celebrate the many ways God inspires us to invest time, talent, and treasure!

End of Summer at Pilgrim
It’s officially the end of summer at Pilgrim Church on Sunday, September 8th. That’s when we’ll return to our usual schedule, with worship services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Chaplain Karl to Afghanistan
Earlier this week Pilgrim’s former pastor, Army Chaplain Karl Redelsheimer, deployed for a 9 month tour in Afghanistan with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. He has arrived at Kandahar and is doing fine; he now will be going to his assigned location.  His wife Kim has requested the prayers of the Pilgrim community for him and for his family during this time. Kim will have his address soon; please contact Barbara DeGraff at 773-477-4824 or and she will provide that information as soon as it is available.
Pilgrim’s Vision Going Forward
Throughout the summer, we've been exploring the habits the early church adopted in Acts 2. We've been bringing some of the content and feedback we received through the “40 Days to Shape our Future” during Lent. This exploration will resume in September, when we’ll be lifting up our proposed mission statement and core practices and how they could be used to shape our future ministry:

September 8th—Lift up Academic Excellence with a Heart
September 15th—(Block Party Sunday) Mpower Homes for Faith Formation
September 22nd—Preach on Mission Statement: In Christ's love, we gather, prepare, and send all as leaders for God's mission in the world. (GPS)
Congregational Forum on the Core Values (after service)
September 29th—Congregational Meeting to approve core values

Please continue to consider the areas of inclusion of children and youth, and justice for the vulnerable which were emphasized at worship this summer as you reflect on the question: What are the habits are we as Pilgrim going to form going forward as we see the Holy Spirit move within us?

Items Needed for Penny Social
We are looking for new and gently used items for the Penny Social to be held in Maring Hall, along with the Quilt Show at the Block Party. Please leave the items in the school office, marked for Anne Barsano. Thank you!
40 Days Fast Action
for Immigration Reform
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) invites you to sign up and participate in an interfaith 40 Days of Fasting, Prayer and Action for immigration reform. The 40 Days Fast Action for Immigration Reform starts the Sunday after Labor Day and lasts from September 8th to October 18th. This is an opportunity for faith communities to come together and make our voices heard on what is perhaps the most important civil and human rights issue of the day.  Congregations as a body and individuals can decide on what type of fasting they will have, when and how long to engage in the action as long as it happens within the timeframe specified.  Each day of fasting can be devoted to one of LIRS’s core principles of immigration reform:
Pathway to citizenship
Humane enforcement of immigration laws
Family unity
Protection of refugees and asylum seekers
Protection for U.S. citizens and migrant workers

The micro-site for the action ( has a wealth of information and resources including suggested interfaith liturgical prayers to accompany each fast. Please join us and other faith communities across the country as we pray, fast and advocate to reform our broken immigration system.

Our Prayer for Sunday
Direct us, O Lord God, in all our doings with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name; and finally, by your mercy, bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Deuteronomy 30:15-20: Moses speaks to the Israelites, who are about to enter the land promised to their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In this passage, he lays out the stark choice before them: choose life by loving and obeying the Lord; or choose death by following other gods.

The Psalm is Psalm 1:They are like trees planted by streams of water. (Ps, 1:3)

The second reading is Philemon 1-21: While Paul was in prison, he was aided by a runaway slave named Onesimus. The slave’s master, Philemon, was a Christian friend of Paul. Paul told Onesimus to return to his master and encouraged Philemon to receive Onesimus back as a Christian brother.

The Gospel iMatthew 25:14-30: Jesus tells a parable about his second coming, indicating that it is not sufficient merely to maintain things as they are. Those who await his return should make good use of the gifts that God has provided them.
