Mission Statement and Core Practices
At a recent congregational meeting, Pilgrim approved the following mission statement and core practices:

In Christ's love, we gather, prepare,
 and send all as leaders
for God's mission in the world.  (GPS)

As a learning and serving community, we :

Praise God with all generations together
Invite everyone to be present together in Christ
Lift up academic excellence with a heart,
Grow in prayer and in the Word,
Respond by advocating justice for the vulnerable,
Invest time, talent, and resources generously, and
Mpower homes for faith formation

Thank you to all who participated in the months of sessions that has culminated in shaping this foundation for ministry!
Build Resurrection Update
Thanks be to God! GOOD NEWS!!! Together we have raised $113,067 in offerings or pledges in the past few weeks. Together with the $60,000 the Salvadoran Church had raised before, we now have $173,061. Only $6,939 is left to raise to reach our total goal of $180,000. Please pray and invite friends to help finish raising the $6,939 so Christian and the Lutheran Church of El Salvador can start building this November 2013. For more information, please visit
Come to El Salvador 2014
If you have ever wanted to serve God on a mission trip, now is the time! Come with us to El Salvador, Central America July 31st- August 10th, 2014.   We will be witnessing the dedication of a new Resurrection Lutheran Church in San Salvador, El Salvador.  We will be able to meet Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Bishop Medardo Gomez and the leaders in the Lutheran Church of El Salvador.  We will accompany the church in their work to resettle and feed refugees, help children attend school, minister with the homeless, and encourage our sister churches who raise Christian voices for human rights on a daily basis. This trip is open to all people. ALL AGES WELCOME, no Spanish knowledge required.  Please grab a brochure on the back table for next steps!

Dear Pilgrim Church Friends,
Thank you very much for your celebration of my retirement at worship and with your generous gift. I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to serve, to learn, to share, and to know so many wonderful people. As I travel down the road ahead, it will be with warm memories of my time at Pilgrim Church.
Blessings to all, Barbara DeGraff

“Faith5 Night”
with Guest Presenter Amy Kippen
Friday, November 8th
Dear Pilgrim Parents,
We need YOU on Friday, November 8th, for our discussion about the future of Faith Formation, Christian Education and Youth Fellowship at Pilgrim. This is a special opportunity to come together as parents, learn more about the Faith Inkubators curriculum used at Pilgrim, ask questions, and share the goals you have for your children.

The best part is, we will have some help! We are excited to welcome facilitator Amy Kippen, director of Faith Formation at Faith Lutheran in Fargo, ND. Amy will lead our discussion about structuring a strong Christian education program based on current research, and practical ways to intentionally strengthen family bonding and faith formation at home. Bring your ideas, and she will bring her experience! We look forward to seeing you at this very special Pilgrim Parent event!

Give the Gift of Warmth
Through Coat Angels!
SPaRK's service team has once again chosen Coat Angels for this fall's Seasons of Service project. Coat Angels, founded by Pilgrim parent Micki LaSeur, provides coats for children in the city that would otherwise have no coat to wear this winter. A fifty-dollar donation provides a coat, hat, mittens and a scarf for one child, and makes a wonderful Christmas gift for friends and family. We will be selling gift cards after the 10:30 service on Sundays from November 10th through December 1st. You can also purchase a gift card by contacting Pilgrim parent Lara Otsuka at Later in December, we will shop for coats and then bag and tag them for delivery. Please watch for dates for these activities and join us for a meaningful holiday experience!
Parents’ Night Out
Parents’ Night Out is a quarterly event in which we provide free babysitting for up to 30 children from Pilgrim and the surrounding community. The parents get a night out without breaking the bank, and the kids have a blast! As we plan our November event, we’re looking for parents who want to volunteer. If you volunteer, you’ll be guaranteed a spot for your child at the next Parents’ Night Out, without having to beat the crowd at registration time. Plus, it’s actually very fun. Spiritual Gifts Class on November 10
Did you know you have spiritual gifts? A Spiritual Gifts Class at Edison Park Lutheran Church, 6626 N. Oliphant Ave., Chicago, IL 60631, on Sunday, November 10, 2013, from 4 to 7:30 p.m., will give you the opportunity to find out what your spiritual gifts are and how you can use them within your church, family and community. You will be asked to fill out a Spiritual Gifts Inventory either on paper or on your computer before the class. In the class, we will learn about the spiritual gifts and hear from others how they use and learned about their spiritual gifts. Everyone will have a private one on one session to review and talk about your Spiritual Gifts.
The class will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday with a dinner at the break. For more information, and to register, call the congregation at 773-631-9131.
Our Prayer for Sunday
O God, our eternal redeemer, by the presence of your Spirit you renew and direct our hearts. Keep always in our mind the end of all things and the day of judgment. Inspire us for a holy life here, and bring us to the joy of the resurrection, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Job 19:23–27aJob suffers the loss of children, wealth, and health. Accused by his companions of wrongdoing, he knows himself to be innocent. Here, in the midst of his suffering, Job clings to the radical hope that his vindicator, his redeemer, lives; and that one day he himself will see God.

The second reading is 2 Thessalonians 2:1–5, 13–17Paul writes to encourage the church at Thessalonica in a time of confusion and opposition. Here, the confusion concerned the return of Christ. Paul writes to those who were allowing their concern over Jesus' imminent return to divert them from the central teachings of the gospel.

The Gospel is Luke 20:27–38:  The Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection of the dead, try to trap Jesus. They formulate the convoluted case of a serial widow who marries a succession of seven brothers. Jesus responds by teaching about God, to whom all are alive and in whom all relationships are fulfilled.
