Subject: Don’t do it, Jesus

Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,
Join us this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. as we celebrate the mysterious, amazing love of God demonstrated to us through the cross. Peter tried to talk Jesus out of the cross (Matthew 16:21-28)… and sometimes, we talk ourselves out of it too… yet, it is the cross that grounds us in grace and frees us to truly live abundantly… have a great weekend and see you soon!
Prayer Ministry cancelled this Saturday.
Prayer time is usually held at the parsonage (4332 N Winchester) from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

September 7th at 10:30 a.m. Join us as we install our Sunday School Teachers and begin our Fall Sunday School session at 9:15 a.m.

8 a.m. Service--Familiar and Reflective
The worship committee has spent some time over the summer seeking feedback, discussing, and praying inspired by the question: “How might the Spirit want to shape our 8 am service in a distinctive and faithful way?” These discussions have led us to create an 8 a.m. service starting on September 7th that is both reflective in nature and familiar in its use of music.  We are also exploring providing a nursery for that service, as we have many young families that are attracted to the hour of the service. We encourage you to come and experience the 8 a.m service this fall!

P.S. We will not be having an 8 a.m. service on Sunday, September 14th.  We will have only one outdoor service that day at 10 a.m., as we will begin the block party immediately afterward!  The 8 a.m. service will continue every Sunday the following week, September 21st.

Giving a Gift to All of our Children Thank you to those who may have contributed to the Dave Maring School Endowment Fund. This Congregation has established this fund with a vision that when fully funded, income from the Fund is going to provide scholarship aid and seed money for new programs at Pilgrim. We currently have a matching grant challenge from a member of the congregation. We need to raise $25,000 and the donor will match it. Please help if you can. Donations are being accepted via the Pilgrim webpage.

Advocates for ELCA Mission Work Needed
Does the work of ELCA in mission to the world appeal to you? Would you like to participate in contributing to their efforts? The Mission Gifts Team invites the members of the congregation to help by researching the ELCA Relief and Development projects and and submitting an application requesting Mission Gift funds for one or more of them. We would like a portion of the money currently available for Mission Gifts to go to an ELCA-sponsored mission, per the guidelines developed for the current Capital Campaign which concludes at the end of 2014.

Our Prayer for Sunday
O God, we thank you for your Son, who chose the path of suffering for the sake of the world. Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to follow your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
 Romans 12:9–21;
Paul presents benchmarks for faithful relationships with Christians and non-Christians. Love is the unflagging standard of our behavior. When we encounter evil, we do not resort to its tactics but seek to overcome it with good. While Christians cannot control the actions and attitudes of others, we seek to live at peace with all people.

The Gospel reading is Matthew 16:21–28
After Peter confesses that Jesus is “the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (16:16), Jesus reveals the ultimate purpose of his ministry. These words prove hard to accept, even for a disciple whom Jesus has called a “rock.”
