Pilgrim Update
November 30, 2014

Dear Friends,

There's a lot of things calling for our attention these days... especially during the holidays. But let's remember the true purpose of this season... they're called "holy days" for a reason.  Come experience the Holy, in worship, so we can be grounded in the hope of the One who comes for us. Join us for the first Sunday of Advent, as we light the wreath and begin a wonderful season at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.!

Next Sunday: Installation of New
Church Office Manager, Lindsay White—December 7

Join us on Sunday, December 7tth at the 10:30 a.m. service as we install our new Church Office Manager, Lindsay White! A native of Bay City, Michigan, Lindsay completed her B.A. in Finance at Michigan State University and brings a wonderful level of administrative acumen to the position.  She has been active volunteer since she joined Pilgrim as a member earlier this year, and is the proud mother of a handsome 13 month old son named Lincoln.  Join us on the 7th in welcoming Lindsay to our staff!
Senior Christmas Luncheon—Dec 4
Attention Seniors! You are cordially invited to the parsonage,4332 N. Winchester Ave., for Christmas Luncheon and singing of Christmas Carols Thursday, December 4th from 12:00p.m. to 2:00p.m. Please RSVP to Pastor Kristian at 773-990-0813 or
Christmas Decorating—Dec 6
Join us Saturday, December 6 at 10 a.m. to decorate the sanctuary for Christmas.  We'll be putting up and decorating the trees, hanging banners and wreaths, and putting up outdoor lighting.  There are things kids can do to help, so families are definitely welcome.  Refreshments will be served.

Christmas Caroling, Hot Chocolate &
Chili—Dec 14
Meet at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, (4300 N. Winchester) Sunday, December  14 at 4:00 p.m. for caroling in the neighborhood. Then join us for a Chili dinner following at 5:30  p.m. at Pastor Kristian and Anna-Kari’s house (4332 N. Winchester Ave.) All are invited!
Growing Forward Capital Campaign Update
The Capital Campaign Committee composed of Gerhardt Boecler, Mark Franke, Pastor Anna-Kari Johnson, Mike Marinelli, Jason Ruger, Jim Volkens and Pastor Kristian Johnson would like to offer their blessings and gracious thanks to the congregation for their generous offerings towards our 2015-2017 Campaign from last Commitment Sunday. An initial update on the Growing Forward Capital Campaign pledges reflects that $153,629 has been committed from all of you to date. We would like to remind our members that it is still possible to make commitments now and going forward to the Campaign with time, talents and pledges. The Growing Forward Committee is working very hard to attain a 3-year giving dollar total of $300,000 from both our church and school members to fund much needed facility repairs and upgrades. For more information on the Campaign itself and these projects or to receive a Growing Forward Campaign brochure, please contact Jim Volkens at or 773-216-1624. To still submit your Capital Campaign offering, please fill out the Pilgrim Commitment card, which can be found at the back of the church or can be requested from the Church Office at
Sunday School Schedule
There will be Sunday School on November 23 for children not participating in the joint choir with Luther Memorial.  We will take a break for Thanksgiving on November 30, and resume on December 7.  Our Christmas celebration is planned for December 2.
Prayer Ministry
Join us for prayer time at the parsonage (4332 N Winchester), Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Please note: there will be no prayer ministry on Saturday, November 29.
Fall Adult Bible Discussion Group: Unpacking Discipleship
Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. as we study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group; even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!
Our Prayer for Sunday
Faithful God, we confess that we have been unfaithful to you. Like dry leaves and withered grass, our lives are blown about by our sins and the powers of evil around us. Restore us, O God; let the light of your face shine on us, and we shall be saved. Amen.

Sunday’s Readings
First Reading:
Isaiah 64:1–9
This lament comes from a people who have had their hopes shattered. The visions of a rebuilt Jerusalem and a renewed people of God, spoken of in Isaiah 40—55, have not been realized. Instead, the people experience ruin, conflict, and famine. This lament calls God to account—to be the God who has brought deliverance in the past.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3–9
As the Christians in Corinth await the advent of Jesus, Paul reminds them how the Lord has already enriched them through spiritual gifts and will continue to strengthen them until the coming day of the Lord.

Gospel: Mark 13:24-37
In today's reading, Jesus encourages his followers to look forward to the day when he returns in power and glory to end all suffering.

Give the Gift of Warmth!
Pilgrim will once again support Coat Angels this holiday season. Coat Angels, founded by Pilgrim parent Micki LeSueur, provides coats for children in the city that would otherwise have no coat to wear this winter. We will be selling gift cards after the late service from November 16th through December 7th. A fifty-dollar donation provides a coat, hat, mittens and a scarf for one child, and makes a wonderful Christmas gift for friends and family. You can also purchase a gift card by contacting Lara Otsuka at or 773-255-6519.  Thank you for your support of this wonderful organization!

Prayer and Care Boxes—Dec 7
We would like to assemble a “Prayer and Care” Basket for our seniors and shut-ins. Last year, over 25 baskets were assembled and taken by Pilgrim members to deliver. If you have any Christmas decorations, devotional books, chocolate, or any other gifts a senior might enjoy, please bring them to the Pastor’s office or bring them to our assembly session on Sunday, December 7th at 9:20 a.m. For more information, please call Anna-Kari Johnson (773) 990-0814 or Many thanks to you all!

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed
If you would be interested in joining a Coffee Hour team, please contact Anne Barsano at or 773-472-6037.

Communion Bread Bakers Needed
If you can follow a simple recipe and are willing to bake communion bread, please contact Chris Wallis at

Introducing Hot Meals Plus
It's time to expand the HOT MEALS ministry at Pilgrim!  We would like to provide a hot Sat. noon meal to shut-ins in the Pilgrim area.  Two important things have to be done before we can start the new program in January (or at least early in the new year).
1. Contact shut-ins and invite them to participate.  A hot meal would be delivered on pre-arranged Saturdays approx. noontime.  After the initial contact is made, you would give me the name and address and HMP (Hot Meals Plus) would take over from there.  We would need a telephone number and/or an e-mail address and a regular address. 2. Volunteer to Drive and Deliver - 11:30 a.m. to approx. 12:30 p.m. (Sat. noon).  The drivers would pick up a meal from Pilgrim and deliver.
If you have any suggestions on how we can launch this new program, please feel free to contact Janet Taylor  at or 773-777-4052

Hot Meals Ministry
Pilgrim provides a free home-cooked meal for the community every Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in our church fellowship hall (basement.) We welcome all to this meal. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Janet Taylor at

Gloves Needed for Hot Meals Program
Our guests at the hot meal have been asking if we could provide gloves as the weather is getting cooler. Please bring gloves to the church office or to the kitchen, placing them near the hot meals box. Thank you!

Annual Toy Drive for Pablo Casals Elementary School!
Every year for the past 10 years the Pilgrim community has helped bring Christmas joy to children at Pablo Casals Elementary School in Humboldt Park.  This year we are aiming high and hope to collect enough toys for not only the 50 first graders with whom our 1st and 2nd graders will spend the afternoon but also  gifts for all the Pablo Casals preschoolers, kindergartners and 2nd graders-a total of at least 190!
1.  Purchase toys, games or books appropriate for children aged 4-8.  Suggested price range is $10- $15.  Please try to avoid extra-large sized gifts.
2.  Wrap your gift(s) and mark it (them) “G” (girl), “B” (boy) or “E” (either) and bring them to the church office by December 15th.  It is very helpful if you put the toy’s suggested age range on the tag.
3. Put your wrapped and tagged gift(s) in the collection boxes that will appear in the back of church after Thanksgiving break.
4. If you don't have time to shop for gifts, then you are welcome to leave cash or check (made payable to Pilgrim) by December 5th and we will purchase a gift on your behalf.
5. See Mrs. Saiki if you have questions:

Pancake Breakfast—Dec 7

The menu will include gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free pancakes, by request.
