Dear Friends,

This is an important time to be community. A person new to the Pilgrim said to me this week, "I've never considered myself religious, but I want to explore joining Pilgrim church because of the welcome I have experienced, and the welcome Pilgrim represents to all people, especially those who have been judged by others in the past." By gathering each Sunday, and by living as people guided by the light of God's grace during the week, we are fulfilling a deep need for our neighbors, perhaps more so than ever.

This Sunday, we will be welcoming our children into full participation in the worship service with musical offerings from "Gospel Kids +" led by Ms. H. All children are invited to come by 10:10 a.m. to warm up. We also invite you to help us welcome a refugee family as we learn about how to do so from a special guest presenter, Kim Snoddy, from Refugee One.

See you Sunday at 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.!
Today’s Altar Flowers - are given in honor of Arnie Firnhaber and Sarah Lau, given by the Lau Family.

Pilgrim Welcoming Refugees - We at Pilgrim are led to help welcome families fleeing horror and starting a new life in Chicago. TODAY at 12:00 noon we have a representative from RefugeeOne, Kim Snoddy, sharing about how we might assist in mentoring and co-sponsoring a refugee family. Join us in the Annex.

“Vision and Leadership” Congregational Meeting—January 29th
- Calling all members! Our upcoming annual meeting will be January 29th at 11:45 a.m. in Maring Hall. It is a great moment to celebrate the ministry that has taken place over the past year, and lift up the goals we have going forward. We will be voting to approve a resolution regarding undesignated bequests. We will also be electing our council members and sharing a financial update.
We invite you to reflect upon two questions we will discuss at the meeting:
1. One primary way God is blessing your life/your family’s life through Pilgrim is… One untapped or underutilized opportunity for us to extend our mission to the world is… Thank you in advance for your participation!

Quilters & Crafters Play date
- Join us Sunday, January 29th, after the congregational meeting for an afternoon of sewing, knitting or other craft. Bring a snack to share and we'll order dinner around 5 pm. Questions? Contact Chris Wallis at

Strategies for Caring Conversations - A presentation on how to be a supportive and caring listener will be offered to the entire congregation on Sunday March 5th, in Maring Hall, with the time yet to be determined (either between services or after the late service). The presenter will be Bianka Hardin, PsyD and Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and Pilgrim member. The program is intended to help all of us in our communication with partners, children, family, friends and neighbors, as well as those we might be visiting through the Care Ministry, and is especially needed in this time as we try to address the fears and heal the divisions in our communities.

“Renewing Leadership Day Retreat,” Saturday, March 18th with Pastor Stephen Bouman - We have so many amazing members, school families, staff, and volunteers at Pilgrim! It is powerful when we come together as a community to be inspired by our strengths, to face our challenges, and to embrace our opportunities. How is the Spirit inviting each of us to be renewed in our work and to reimagine our future? Join us on Saturday, March 18th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for our “Renewing Leadership Retreat”. Our facilitator will be the Rev. Stephen Bouman, Director of the Domestic Mission unit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 2008. Previously, he served as Bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod and has done extensive work equipping Lutheran Schools throughout the country. He is the author of several books, including The Mission Table: Renewing Congregation and Community. We are thrilled that he can be with us! Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Renee at

Mission Interpretation—Don’t forget to check the latest memo posted on the Mission Bulletin Board at the back of the church. Also, take a look at earlier memos, collected in a notebook on the table in the narthex. Two items of interest include the memo dated 11/15/16 "Reflections from the Church on the Election" by Bishop Eaton and a statement from LIRS (The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service) reaffirming the church's mission to protect and welcome refugees.
