Subject: Camp Discovery Celebration

Pilgrim Announcements
June 28th, 2015

Dear Friends,

Join us this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for our sending VBS celebration, "Camp Discovery", in which our VBS children will sing, present a dramatic reading of the Gospel, and invite us to discover the adventures God has for us!

We also will extend prayers of Godspeed to Greg, Lara, Mallory, and Mia Otsuka, who are moving to Minnesota next week. As you may know, Greg has served as our Council President and Council Member for many years, and Lara has served as a volunteer at many different ministries at Pilgrim, including on SPARK and on our School Board. Please come to help us express our appreciation for their inspired leadership in this place.

See you Sunday at 9:30 .m.!

Pastor Kristian
The Congregational Meeting will take place on Sunday June 28th following the 9:30 a.m. service. You may recall from the last Congregational Meeting in January that Pilgrim's fiscal year now begins on July 1st. Thus, at our June 28th meeting, Council will present the budget (covering July 1st, 2015 to June 30th, 2016) for the congregation's review and approval.
North Center Neighborhood Association 9th Annual Garden Walk
On June 28th, our annual self-guided walking tour of Northcenter gardens and outdoor spaces will feature over 40 homes in addition to live music from local bands and musicians and more surprises! The self-guided tour will occur from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., beginning at Alexander Graham Bell School at 3730 N. Oakley St. (at Grace St.), where maps can be picked up. A suggested donation of $5 will benefit the Common Pantry. Seniors are free!
Support Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School completes their fun week of ‘Camp Discovery’ today. This Sunday, we have the joy of watching the children present our Gospel lesson. Thank you to all of our volunteers who made the week such a success! If you weren’t able to volunteer, you can still help. We are including an offering envelope in our bulletins on Sunday to give you an opportunity to contribute to this ministry, as the donations we invite from the families of our participants do not cover all of the expenses incurred by this ministry. You may also give through  Thank you in advance for your support! A BIG thank you to Chris Wallis for leading such a wonderful ministry for our children.

Join us for prayer time at the parsonage every Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (4332 N. Winchester Ave.)

Summer Enrichment Program
Are you still looking for activities for your little ones this summer? There are still spots left in our Pilgrim Summer Enrichment Program for children ages 4 years old to 3rd grade. The program runs from July 6th—24th on a weekly basis. You can find the flyer with more information and the registration form by clicking HERE
Take “Flat Jesus” with you!
This summer, we invite everyone from Pilgrim to participate in a fun, faith-filled project called “Flat Jesus”! Inspired by Ms. Huelskoetter’s “Flat Kid” project. In the back of the Pilgrim’s sanctuary, you will find a half sheet cardstock with an image of Jesus. Here’s the information as we invite you to participate:
  1. Take flat Jesus with you this summer! Color it, make it your own!
  2. Take a picture with Flat Jesus wherever you are, with whoever you’re with, doing whatever activity, trip, or service
  3. Upload them to Facebook or Twitter at #FlatJesusPilgrim or send them to:
  4. Prizes will be given in the fall to the 10 best pictures! And we’ll enjoy a slideshow in church in the fall!
Love Offering for Mrs. Saiki <3
Our beloved Special Education Teacher, Cheryl Saiki, is leaving her position at Pilgrim to pursue other possibilities in her field. We are sad to see her go. She has been on staff at Pilgrim Lutheran School for over 30 years… teaching under contract with Lutheran Special Education Ministries, then, as an administrator in the school office, and later and for the greatest duration, as a teacher who instructed students with a variety of learning challenges. As her “teaching fell like rain upon tender plants” (Deuteronomy 32:2), the fruit of her work has been phenomenal. Many of her students have not only gone on to college, some of them have their PhD’s, and others are on the way to getting their Doctorates as we speak! We are so grateful for her dedication to the vocation of teaching in a nurturing, Christian environment. She is a phenomenal teacher and is gifted with an inspiring faith and wonderful working knowledge of the Scriptures. While she will continue to bless our community as an active member of our congregation, the loss to Pilgrim School and our students is immense. We invite you to give a “love offering” that will be used as a gift to Cheryl in gratitude for her wonderful dedication and heart. This Sunday, please use a pew envelope to make a gift or feel free to submit it to the office at any time. Please make checks out to “Pilgrim Lutheran Church”, and place on the memo line, “Cheryl Saiki”.
Coffee Hour dates available August 16th (9:30) and November 22nd are still free dates for Coffee Hour for this year.  Please contact Anne Barsano ( know if you would like to sponsor one of them.
Save the Date and Get Involved!
Save the Date! Pilgrim's annual block party will be on Sunday, September 13th. We are already getting ready for food, fun and fellowship!  We are specifically looking for key leaders in organizing activities, kitchen coordination, marketing and outreach, and logistics.  We are also looking for someone to design a flyer. If you would like to help out, please contact Shellie Riedle Volkens at

Pilgrim Lutheran School is thrilled to receive our very first grant from the Dave Maring Endowment Fund. The Maring Fund was set up by the Pilgrim Church and School community in 2014 to support the school in a variety of ways. For the 2014-2015 school year,  the Maring Fund awarded over $2,600, which has been applied to our tuition assistance program. Pilgrim School extends a HUGE “Thank You” to the Dave Maring Endowment Fund and to all its donors for their support of Pilgrim.

Market Day has been bought out by World's Finest Chocolate and will no longer be taking orders from us on a regular monthly basis.    During the months of July and August Pilgrim will receive 10% of any Market Day items purchased at a GFS store. Select Market Day items will be available at the stores until they run out.  Thank you to everyone who has supported Market Day since we started with them in 1989.  Please contact Anne Barsano with any questions as to store locations.
Play Lot Update
School is done, but planning for the play lot renovation is fully under way!  We could still use YOUR HELP!  We've raised about $34,000 for this and to do the first phase right, we need $44,000.  The challenge comes down to purchasing the resilient surface for the smaller half of the play lot by the climbing wall instead of putting in woodchips. We do not want to add a curb in the middle to keep the woodchips in.  PLEASE show your Pilgrim support for this big improvement!  Donations are welcome in the office designated for ’play lot’ as our online portion has closed.  We will also be looking for volunteers in August !  If 50 families each donated $200, we would be at our goal.  Give the gift that will keep giving for the future generations of Pilgrim students.
Amazon SMILE :-)
Shop at AmazonSmile and Amazon will make a donation to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Prayer for this week
Almighty and merciful God, we implore you to hear the prayers of your people. Be our strong defense against all harm and danger, that we may live and grow in faith and hope, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
