Back to School Sunday/Blessing of Backpacks
Join us on Sunday, August 30th at 9:30 a.m. as we say prayers for all students going back to school.  We invite all children to bring their backpacks to school so they can participate in a special blessing of backpacks.    Each child will receive a special gift as well!

Pilgrim Fest!
Mark your Calendars and make plans to celebrate life and Pilgrim on Sunday, September 13th for our annual “Pilgrim Fest” Block Party - sponsored by Thrivent Financial.  We will begin with an outdoor worship service at 10 a.m., followed by  food, live music, entertainment, kids activities, and fun to go around for people of all ages!   Please look for further announcements with volunteer opportunities to make this day a success!   During the 10 a.m service, we will be officially installing our Pilgrim School Staff!  A special thank you to Shellie Riedle and Anne Barsano and the In-reach Committee for bringing this together!
Good news!
Starting on September 6th, Pilgrim will be providing a learning environment for two 2nd year seminarians from LSTC (Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago) preparing to be pastors:  a newly married couple named Hans and Marissa Becklin.

Marissa was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa where her faith has been nurtured since birth in a medium-sized Lutheran congregation. She graduated in 2014 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where she double-majored in Religion and Psychology and met the love of her life, Hans, who shared a love for hymns and bad puns. Marissa enjoys playing the saxophone and piano, writing, biking, drinking coffee, watching PBS, and reading.

Hans is a native of south-central Wisconsin and a life-long Lutheran with experience in rural and urban congregations. He graduated in 2014 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he majored in History and met the love of his life, Marissa, while both were leaders in the College Ministries program. Hans loves reading, hiking, art, cooking, baking bread, singing Bass in choir, and listening to NPR.

Please join us in welcoming them to Pilgrim during their first Sunday, September 6th at 9:30 a.m.

MOPS is a morning group for moms and is back to our regular meeting schedule with two great meetings planned for September!  On Thursday, September 3rd, Grocery Coupon Network's (and our very own) Samantha Doerfler is joining us; she is a coupon expert who considers herself a green mom (organic green, not alien) and loves finding ways to save on anything!   She is a coupon stacking enthusiast and gets a total rush from getting the best deal. Sam will talk about how to save on fresh produce, organic food and discuss ways to stretch your budget with coupons.  On September 17th, writer and speaker Becky Bedouin will join us to talk about food!  She is going to discuss the family dinner, tips for making prep/cooking easier, ways for kids to help in the kitchen, and even sharing some of her recipes.  Our meetings are at the parsonage at 4332 N Winchester.  Doors open at 9 am and childcare is provided until 11:45 a.m.  Cost is $10.  If you would like more information or to RSVP, please contact Tarah Dickerson at

Calling all children!  Join us on Sunday, September 13th for a Kick Off to our Fall Sunday School Program at 9:15 a.m. right before the block party.  We will have activities and crafts and a bible lesson to get our kids ready for the big day!
Prayer time
There will be no Prayer Time on Saturday, August 22nd.  Prayer Time will resume on Saturday, August 29th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Please join us! (4332 N. Winchester Ave.)
Pillowcase Dresses
Last May many of you donated new and gently used pillowcases to assist with a mission project, making dresses for young girls in need. (The project is coordinated with the Orphan Grain Train in Nebraska and is in the works at St. Paul Lutheran in Skokie.)  Pilgrim families donated over 100 pillowcases, and Mrs. Raabe has worked during the summer to sew, to date, 86 of them.  ( We know that our first shipment of 150 dresses went to children in Latvia.) The congregation's goal is to provide 500 dresses. We are always in need of more pillowcases; if you would like to donate any new or gently used cases, give them directly to Mrs. Raabe, and you can be sure that they will be made into dresses.
Hot Meals
Most of the ten teams are well-staffed, but we always need substitutes.  Contact Janet Taylor if you are interested in being a substitute or would like to help in keeping the pantry well-supplied.  Contact Janet Taylor at or (773) 777-4052
Your Legacy: Family, Church, Charity
Join us for any part of a three week seminar:  "Your Legacy:  Family, Church, Charity" Sunday, September 20th, 27th, and October 4th at 9:15 a.m. in Maring Hall.   Would you like to help sustain ministry for generations to come?  Or your alma mater's endowment fund?  How does one go about leaving an inheritance?  It doesn't matter if you're a Midwestern farmer, a Pacific coast fisherman, or a Southern Belle.  If there are people or causes you care about, we can help you uncover ways to enrich their futures and unleash your generosty.   Join us for a series of presentations inspired by the Scriptures that will invite you to pray about your legacy and develop a strategy to help ensure your legacy lives on.
Boxtops For Education
The boxtops collection program continues at Pilgrim, but in a slightly different form.  Hopefully you have been saving boxtops all summer long and have some to bring to school.  Each classroom has a container, and students are encouraged to be part of the collection process.  Classrooms are working to reach a collection goal by the end of January; you can watch the numbers grow on a graph that will be located in Maring Hall.  You can also place your boxtops in the container on the table in the narthex of the church or in the container in the school office.  Each box top is worth 10 cents, and all of those dimes add up to big dollars.  Join the effort!  All funds raised from the boxtops collection will go to fund Pilgrim Kids Care.  Questions?  Contact Paula Raabe ( or check out the program's website
Gift Cards will be sold on Sunday after church and on Monday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. throughout the summer. Please contact Anne Barsano ( with questions.
Flea Market
We are considering having a Flea Market on November 7th to benefit the Tuition Assistance Program if there are enough people interested.  Spaces will be $25 or $30 with a table. As usual we will have a section for Pilgrim sales.  Please let Anne Barsano ( or 773-472-6037) know by October 2nd if you are interested in your own space or if you could help with a variety of jobs.
