Sunday School--We're Baa-ack!
Our fall term begins today, September 7 at 9:15. We’ll begin in the sanctuary to practice some songs for the Block Party worship service the following week before separating into the classrooms. And yes, there will be Sunday School on September 14, albeit a shorter program due to the earlier worship time. Parents, if you are arriving early to help with the Block Party, we will start at our regular 9:15 time. Sunday School is for kids ages 3 to Grade 5. Older students and youth are encouraged to volunteer as helpers. We can always use additional teachers, so if you think this is something you’d like to try, please contact Chris Wallis at The curriculum guides make things very easy to use, especially if you spend a week or two shadowing one of the other teachers. We are in particular need of some volunteers who can help with music during our opening time. This requires about 15 minutes from 9:15 to 9:30, freeing you up for the adult Bible Study or other activities, and our kids would really appreciate it. The CD player just isn’t the same!

March with Pilgrim in the Von Steuben Day Parade- Saturday, Sept. 6th
We are inviting the Pilgrim Community to come out to the Von Steuben Day German Parade on Saturday September 6th to march in this wonderful community event. Let's show our pride in Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School.
Please meet at the North Center CVS at 1pm. The parade usually ends around 3pm in Lincoln Square.
If you need more information or have any questions please contact Pastor Kristian at or Principal Comella at
Thanks and we hope to have a huge turnout!!!

8 a.m. Service--Familiar and Reflective
The worship committee has spent some time over the summer seeking feedback, discussing, and praying inspired by the question: “How might the Spirit want to shape our 8 am service in a distinctive and faithful way?” These discussions have led us to create an 8 a.m. service starting on September 7th that is both reflective in nature and familiar in its use of music.  We are also exploring providing a nursery for that service, as we have many young families that are attracted to the hour of the service. We encourage you to come and experience the 8 a.m service this fall!

P.S. We will not be having an 8 a.m. service on Sunday, September 14th.  We will have only one outdoor service that day at 10 a.m., as we will begin the block party immediately afterward!  The 8 a.m. service will continue every Sunday the following week, September 21st.
Attention: Pilgrim Jr and Sr High Youth
It’s time to get together and have some fun and dream about the way we can make a difference! Join us for a night of food, beach volleyball, and fun on Wednesday, September 17th at Montrose Beach. We will be gathering from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. All Jr and Sr. High youth are invited!

Save the Date: October 5
There will be a baby shower on October 5th for Marilyn Donovan's daughter, who is expecting a baby girl and is due on September 11. Contact Anne Barsano for giftcards.

Fall Adult Bible Discussion Group: Unpacking Discipleship
Following Jesus is life’s most challenging and rewarding adventure! Yet, when we hear words like “evangelism” and “discipleship”, we don’t always get so excited. Is it because these words are too dated and “churchy” to be useful in 2014? Or do they need to be renewed and reclaimed so that we can live Jesus' dream for us? Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. starting this fall on September 21st as we begin a new study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group, even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!

Prayer Ministry
Prayer time is held at the parsonage (4332 N Winchester) from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Join Luther Memorial on September 7th
We at Pilgrim are developing a partnership with our neighboring ELCA congregation, Luther Memorial (2500 W. Wilson). Some of their members will be joining us for our block party on Sunday, September 14th. We, in turn, are invited to help with their ELCA “God’s Work, Our Hands” Day of Service and attend their Block Party to follow! Starting at 11:15 a.m., you’re invited to join in on one of four on-site service projects: Project Linus, Making Kits for Lutheran World Relief, Children’s Center Clean Up, or assisting at Lincoln Square Friendship Center’s Food Pantry. Then, stick around for the Block Party that will begin at 12 noon. For more information, call Luther Memorial at 773-539-3018 or email at
First Sunday, Feed the Hungry
Did you know that on the first Sunday of each month our ushers take a special collection of donations in support of local and world efforts to feed the hungry? Whether you want to support the Pilgrim Saturday Hotmeals program or one of several other worthy missions, you can join in. We invite you to use the special envelopes provided in each pew, check off one of the designated missions listed, enclose your donation of any amount, take the envelope with you when you go for communion and simply hand the envelope to the usher.
Care Ministry Orientation
The Care Ministry group is forming to provide visits to home-bound or hospitalized members of our congregation. Please prayerfully consider serving in this way. A Care Ministry orientation has been scheduled for Sunday, September 21, at 12:15 p.m. and lunch is included. Please RSVP to Judy Daniel or Claudia George.
Advocates for ELCA Mission Work Needed
Does the work of ELCA in mission to the world appeal to you? Would you like to participate in contributing to their efforts? The Mission Gifts Team invites the members of the congregation to help by researching the ELCA Relief and Development projects and submitting an application requesting Mission Gift funds for one or more of them. If there is a project that holds a special interest for you, and you would like submit an application requesting a Mission Gift on their behalf, please talk to one of the members of the Mission Gift Team: Anna-Kari Johnson, Joe Cardo, Tarah Dickerson, or Claudia George.

Our Prayer for Sunday
O Lord God, enliven and preserve your church with your perpetual mercy. Without your help, we mortals will fail; remove far from us everything that is harmful, and lead us toward all that gives life and salvation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
 Ezekiel 33:7–11
God appointed Ezekiel as a sentinel for the house of Israel. Ezekiel must faithfully convey God's warnings to the people. Remarkably, God—who is about to attack Jerusalem—gives a warning with the hope that repentance will make the attack unnecessary.

The Gospel reading is Matthew 18:15–20
Jesus offers practical advice to his disciples on how individuals—and the church as a whole—should show wrongdoers their need for repentance.
