Subject: A Grace Experiment

Pilgrim Update
Dear Friends,
Amid the pace and the stress of life, it is a wonderful thing to experience GRACE. At Pilgrim, the Spirit is weaving tradition and innovation to create an ongoing "grace experiment." This Sunday is going to be one of those moments! Join us at 8 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.
and... Thanks for all that came out to participate or volunteer at our block party! Over 300 people attended! What a great kingdom moment!

Sunday School--We're Baa-ack!
Join us for Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. Sunday School is for kids ages 3 to Grade 5. Older students and youth are encouraged to volunteer as helpers. We can always use additional teachers, so if you think this is something you’d like to try, please contact Chris Wallis at The curriculum guides make things very easy to use, especially if you spend a week or two shadowing one of the other teachers. We are in particular need of some volunteers who can help with music during our opening time. This requires about 15 minutes from 9:15 to 9:30, freeing you up for the adult Bible Study or other activities, and our kids would really appreciate it. The CD player just isn’t the same!
Blessing of the Animals- October 4th
Do you have animals in your life? Bring your pets to the Gazebo at Welles Park on Saturday, October 4th at 10 a.m. in honor of St. Francis! We'll be joining animals and people from Luther Memorial Church as we hold a brief, interactive prayer service and then bless each animal in attendance. Come out as Luther Memorial and Pilgrim Lutheran bless neighborhood pets at Welles Park in honor of St. Francis. Drinks and treats will be served... see you then!
Cocktails for a Cause, Friday, October 17
Join Pilgrim parents, friends and alums at Atlantic Bar and Grill on Friday, October 17, 7:00—11:00 p.m. to enjoy an evening out and help meet the challenge to raise $50,000 for the Dave Maring School Endowment Fun. Pilgrim members John and Mary Satter have issued a generous challenge to the Pilgrim community. As the congregation raises the first $25,000, the Satters will match those donations—dollar for dollar—to kick-start the Fund. Meeting this challenge is an awesome way for the Pilgrim community to honor Dave Maring’s contributions to Pilgrim and to continue his good work into the future. The event runs from 7-11 p.m. Tickets will be available in the school and church offices, as well as outside the school Tuesdays after school and Fridays before school. Tickets are $40 through October 10, and October 11-17 will be $45 (and will be available at the door). This event is for adults only, and payment is by cash or check only, please. Looking forward to see you there.
8 a.m. Service--Familiar and Reflective
The worship committee has spent some time over the summer seeking feedback, discussing, and praying inspired by the question: “How might the Spirit want to shape our 8 am service in a distinctive and faithful way?” These discussions have led us to create an 8 a.m. service that is both reflective in nature and familiar in its use of music.  We are also exploring providing a nursery for that service, as we have many young families that are attracted to the hour of the service. We encourage you to come and experience the 8 a.m service this fall!

Fall Adult Bible Discussion Group: Unpacking Discipleship
Following Jesus is life’s most challenging and rewarding adventure! Yet, when we hear words like “evangelism” and “discipleship”, we don’t always get so excited. Is it because these words are too dated and “churchy” to be useful in 2014? Or do they need to be renewed and reclaimed so that we can live Jesus' dream for us? Join us on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. starting this fall on September 21st as we begin a new study “Unpacking Discipleship” together. This is a “no experience necessary” group, even if you’ve never read the Bible, you are invited to learn with us!

The 2014 CROP Hunger Walk/Pizza Party
Pilgrim is proud to be participating in the 2014 CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 19th at 2 p.m. The CROP Walk is celebrating it’s 35th year of fighting hunger both around the corner and around the world. Those interested in carpooling can meet at the church following the late service that day (around 12:45 p.m.) or you can meet us where the walk steps off (St. James Episcopal Church, 65 E. Huron Street). There is no fee to participate, but walkers are encouraged to gather donations from friends and family to support their efforts. After the walk, we’ll gather back in Maring Hall for a pizza party to celebrate. You will be hearing more about the CROP Walk at school and church in the coming weeks, but you can sign up at any time by contacting Lara Otsuka at or (773) 255-6519. Our Prayer for Sunday
Almighty and eternal God, you show perpetual loving-kindness to us your servants. Because we cannot rely on our own abilities, grant us your merciful judgment, and train us to embody the generosity of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Sunday’s Readings
The first reading is
Jonah 3:10—4:11;
After Jonah’s short sermon in 3:4, the Ninevites all repented and God decided to spare the city. Jonah objected to this and became even more angry when God ordered a worm to destroy a plant that was providing shade. The book ends with a question that challenges any who are not ready to forgive: You, Jonah, are all worked up about a bush, but should not I be concerned about a hundred and twenty thousand Ninevites who do not know the difference between their right and left hands?

The second reading is Philippians 1:21–30;
Paul writes to the Philippians from prison. Though he is uncertain about the outcome of his imprisonment, he is committed to the ministry of the gospel and calls on the Philippians to live lives that reflect and enhance the gospel mission.

The Gospel reading is Matthew 20:1–16
Jesus tells a parable about God's generosity, challenging the common assumption that God rewards people according to what they have earned or deserve.
