Samuel Whitbread Academy E-Newsletter                                                    No.4 (14/2/14)

Dear Parents and Carers

We have had a great start to the new year at Samuel Whitbread, with over half of Year 11 receiving their English and Maths GCSE results, which they took back in November. There were lots of cheers, and some tears, during the Year 11 assembly on Thursday, when the envelopes were handed out. Many of our students have already achieved their target grades in Maths and English. It was also great to see the students, who fell slightly short of their target grade, now even more determined to
do better in the summer!

Principal

Sixth Form
Debate Challenge
The Year 12 debate challenge has begun. 12A, 12C and 12E have been victorious in the battles so far with 12B, 12D and 12F defeated despite strong arguments. The winning tutor groups progress to Round 2 (Quarter Finals), where a different debate title awaits. I must say congratulations to all six tutor groups so far, the debates have been amazing with in-depth research and thought being put into the speeches and questions/responses.

Next Steps Parent/Student presentation Evening Thursday 6th February saw over 100 students and their parents attend the Next Steps Evening where there was an in-depth explanation of how to begin applying to university whilst also exploring other options available
to our Year 12s once they have completed their studies. This was the biggest ever turnout for this evening and I hope students will begin preparing and researching for their next steps from this point onwards. The two PowerPoint presentations have been emailed to all students and are on the school website.

Autism Assembly
Three students who have Autism/Asperger’s delivered an amazing assembly to Year 12 students on Monday 3rd February. Huge thanks and a big well done must go to Luke Hutchings, Will Hart and Kyle Ford for inviting us into the mind of an autistic person and for explaining what it is like. Year 12 students responded with maturity and respect and this was lovely to see.

A big thank you must go to Alex Smith for assisting with the presentation.

Mr L Huckle - Head of Year 12

Sports/Arts News
Basketball
SWA U14 Basketballers made it five wins from five last night with a 38-14 victory over Biddenham. It was an outstanding team display, but a particular mention must go to Murray McGill who put in an excellent performance at point guard.
Hockey
SWA U14 hockey boys finished an excellent second (to Bedford School) in the county tournament last week. The whole team were amazing and it is a huge achievement
for them. Jack Chiswell was outstanding throughout and finished with Player of the Tournament. The boys now go
to the Regional Finals and represent Bedfordshire.

The Junior Girls Hockey side continued their winning
streak with a 5-1 victory over Biddenham. The team
played superbly, well led by the stand-in captain Kate Chappell whilst Megan Dennis was representing the
District at the County Cross Country Championships.
Kate scored twice and helped set up two goals for Emilia
De Luca, while Ellie Jones completed the scoring. Georgia Jack was excellent in goal and the girls welcomed new recruits Charlotte Langeveld and Natalie Smith to the squad.

Football
The SWA U14 football boys won through to the County Cup semi-final last week, beating Mark Rutherford in horrendous weather conditions. An excellent team performance full of heart and determination was pivotal in the 3-1 victory, goals from Alex Taylor, Charlie Scott and Dan Imrie deciding the result. The boys will now play either Stopsley or Redborne for a place in the final.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics SWA girls achieved a Silver Medal in the Regional Schools Gymnastics competition last week for their Group 6 routine, a fantastic achievement. Well done
to Jadie Larham, Kizzy Plumb, Amber Freeman, Scarlett Freeman, Elle MacGregor and Becky Darnell (who also achieved a bronze medal in tumbling!)

Holidays
We would like to remind Parents and Carers of the regulations regarding holidays.

The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 and Central Bedfordshire advise that unless special circumstances* are identified then term time holidays should not be authorised.

*Special circumstances are defined as:
‘For service personnel and other employees prevented from taking holidays outside term-time if the holiday will have minimal disruption to the pupil’s education’ and ‘when the family needs to spend more time together to support each other after a crisis.’

These changes aim to minimise the impact of absence during the school year.

Holiday Request Forms can be collected from the Attendance Office (Room 107).

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs A Martin – 01462 628041 or amartin@bemat.org.uk
