Subject: Graduation

Dear friend,

We’ve talked a lot about graduation with regard to our programs. But we sometimes forget how important and unique that is.

I was talking with someone this morning who reminded us that it’s probably the most important thing about our work, something most international organizations can only dream about. Every day we are working ourselves out of a job.

We could plan to continually give assistance to those living in extreme poverty, and that would, of course, make us feel good. But cycles of dependence seem to only get worse with time. So, before we start any new program, we think a lot about how to end it.

Countries, and even regions, can be very different, so we don’t plan to graduate our participants the same way in each area. Sometimes it’s a 2-3 year cycle before a local facilitator moves on to a new village. Sometimes it’s a 5-7 year cycle before an entire region develops the leaders and the financial strength to carry on without us.

In all cases it’s a time for celebration, and an opportunity to move into a new area where extreme poverty is still debilitating and the local church leaders have often waited for years for us to help them start a program in their area.

Thank you for walking with us and making these extraordinary moments possible.

Blessings,
