DICP Digest
A monthly newsletter for clients and colleagues of Development is CHILD'S PLAY!
Hello May!

Thank you to everyone who submitted summer scheduling forms. We know it's difficult to schedule all of your activities, and we thank you for completing not-so-fun form for us. We had our summer scheduling meeting on Wednesday complete with a giant calendar, 12 different colors of post-it notes, and a few room 2 negotiations, but we think we have a tentative schedule pretty well ironed out. Your therapist should speak with you about your summer time, but please feel free to ask her or check with the office if you're curious.

In May's newsletter we have a letter from Sena and Sahana, an introduction of one of our newest therapists, Amberlynn, and some information about a fantastic app she created for kids who struggle with handwriting. Also look for information about our kindergarten readiness group, parent's night out, and some news from Chuck E. Cheese's!

Warmest Thanks,
The therapists and staff at Development is CHILD'S PLAY!

Thank you for trusting us to work with your children! That you found us, and have stayed with us, is incredibly meaningful to the entire DICP team! Unfortunately, we have recently found it necessary to initiate a rate increase. You should have already received the portal message about our upcoming rate changes, but in case you missed it, please see below for details.

May 2, 2018

Dear DICP Families:

We are writing to notify you that as of June 1, 2018 we will be increasing our rates by 2.9%. As a result, our regular 50-minute treatment session will cost $175. Evaluations, consultations, deposits, and missed session charges will also increase by the same percentage.

Because we believe in being transparent with our business practices, we would like to share with you our plans to reinvest the additional 2.9% into our business:

Employee benefits- The keys to providing high quality therapy for your children is the continuity of our staff and employing skilled therapists who are committed to providing individualized care to each of the clients on their caseload. In order to ensure that our therapists are compensated fairly so that they can afford to remain in the Silicon Valley, we will be giving them a cost of living increase. In addition, we provide them with health and retirement benefits to care for themselves now and into the future. And we offer continuing education benefits so that our therapists can stay current on evidenced-based therapeutic practice standards.

Inflation increases- Similar to the rising costs related to living in the Bay Area, the costs associated with running a business are also impacted by inflation.

Invest in our client experience- In the past year we hired an office manager to assist with scheduling and billing and we began accepting credit cards to make your experience more convenient. We made cosmetic changes to our interior, upgraded our suspension system and added new therapy equipment. We also began offering weekend treatment hours in addition to our expanded Monday through Friday times.

We hope you understand our need to increase our rates at this time. We look forward to continuing to provide you with the excellent care you have come to expect from our clinic.

Sincerely,
Sahana Baker-Malone and Sena Felt

Therapist Vacations

If your therapist is out of the office, we still want to see you! If your therapist is going on vacation, we will do our best to make it up or find another therapist who can see your child at or near their scheduled time.

Meet Amberlynn Slavin

Amberlynn is the newest addition to Team DICP, and we are so excited she decided to join us. Amberlynn was a DICP Aide in 2012 and 2013, and returned as a therapist in March of this year. Amberlynn has an adventurous spirit and has already brought some great ideas to DICP. Welcome Amberlynn!

Amberlynn received her undergraduate degree from Springfield College with a BS in Movement Science and Sports Studies and Physical Education, and a minor in Athletic Coaching.  Amberlynn got her master's degree in OT at Springfield College, and has been practicing occupational therapy since graduating in 2015. Amberlynn has worked in a school based setting, a multi-disciplinary pediatric facility, and a skilled nursing facility. Amberlynn’s interests include Sensory Integration and Reflex Integration. She has experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, mental health disorders, and other developmental disorders.

Amberlynn and her husband moved to the Bay Area from New Hampshire 6 years ago. The couple recently completed a 5 month self-supported bicycle trip through Central Asia and the Middle East. During their adventures through Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Oman, Amberlynn practiced pediatric OT and learned about the different cultures, and their different practice models.

When Amberlynn is not working at the clinic, you can find her coaching competitive gymnastics, working on all sorts of creative projects, and eating artichokes. As a student completing her occupational therapy graduate fieldwork, Amberlynn came up with the idea for an assistive technology app called SnapType. The app is now helping over 2 million students worldwide to keep up with their peers in the classroom. (Check it out, it's a great app!).

Amberlynn says:
"I LOVE being an OT! Helping children and their families overcome challenges brings me so much joy. When I see their eyes light up after having completed a previously impossible task, it makes my heart happy. My work allows me to express myself creatively and my clients appreciate the personalized treatment I give them."

Meet SnapType!

When Amberlynn, the latest OT to join our team, was in graduate school for OT, she created an app for children who struggle with handwriting.

How it the app works: Simply snap a photo of a school worksheet and then tap on the screen to add text. Her app SnapType is now helping over 2 millions students in over 90 countries all over the world! Here is a link to a short video if you would like to see how the app works!

Amberlynn recently presented her app SnapType at the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) National Conference in Salt Lake City. She was thrilled to have won the AOTA inventors showcase (a.k.a Shark Tank pitch contest). She won the opportunity to present next January at the Assistive Technology Industry Association National Conference in Florida.

We feel fortunate to have such an imaginative and innovative therapist in our midst! If you would like to try the SnapType app with your child, download SnapType or SnapType Pro today!

Parent's Night Out
at Development is Child's Play!!

Friday May 4th
6:30 - 9:00 pm.

To enter the drawing, sign up in the waiting room, call the office, notify your therapist, or send us an email or portal message.

Every year DICP offers a free event such as Parent's Night Out as a thank you to our families. This year we are planning it for Friday, May 4th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. We ask our families to sign up for a drawing and then we randomly select families to participate based on space and adult-to-child ratios to keep our event safe and fun. The families who are selected to participate may bring their child (and any siblings over the age of two) to DICP to play for the duration of the event. Parent's night out is supervised by therapists, OT aides, and volunteers and includes gross motor, fine motor, and sensory activities but is not a therapy session. It is a chance for the kids to come and play with the equipment they love in a less-structured environment. The kids love it!

Here are some more details:

  • DICP clients and their siblings (over the age of two and potty-trained please) are welcome to sign up.
  • Participants will be; selected by a drawing, notified the week before the event, and asked to confirm their plan to attend.

  • More details will be provided closer to the event.
Call or visit the office, or send us a message on the portal for more information or to sign up for a chance to participate!
