Subject: A meaningful Memorial Day wish for you Friend

Hello Friend,

For those of us in the U.S., this is Memorial Day holiday weekend. It's the official start to the summer.  I hope your weekend is safe, happy, and meaningful if you are celebrating it like my family will be.

As we honor the soldiers and heroes who have given their lives in defense of their country and the values we stand for, I hope you give thanks for the peace, freedom, and prosperity that are provided to you in today's world.

Yes, there is still war, oppression, and injustice in the world. Too much of it. But we are infinitely better off today than in most of human history.  And no matter where in the world you may be reading this message, there are at least a couple billion people living in extreme poverty who might give their lives for the chance to trade places with you if they could.

There are many ways to honor those who gave their lives in defense of our country.  We can give a moment of silence on Memorial Day. We can attend a parade. Visit a memorial. Say "thank you" to those who have lost a family member or who are risking their lives today.

I believe what matters more is what we do and say during the rest of the year.

"Often the test of courage is not to die but to live."
Vittorio Alfieri

On this Memorial Day weekend, I hope you give some special time and attention to enjoying the country that you live in. Then we can recommit to making it a safer, more peaceful and more prosperous place when get back to work next week.

Yours truly,
