Last week we showed you why strength training is the closest thing we middle-aged guys have to a fountain of youth. Also, we outlined an easy-to-follow strategy for anyone wishing to get strong.
If you missed it, the program was the brainchild of Canadian strongman Doug Hepburn. Employing a super-simple progression system, Doug showed how it’s possible to add 120 pounds to any major lift in a single year.
If you want to give Doug’s system a try, you can read all about it on our site below…
In response to last Monday, many of our readers have been asking about Doug’s lifts and stunts. So, if you’re curious to know how this mass-monster measures up, check out the following tale of the tape:
- Easily bends twelve-inch spikes, tears apart car license plates and crushes cans of oil with bare hands
- One-arm military press with 200 pounds in strict form, and smashes out 37 reps with 120 pounds
- Two-handed strict barbell curl with 260 pounds (yes, you read that right - 260 pounds!)
- Bench presses 580 pounds
- Squats 800 pounds
- Deadlifts 800 pounds
- Suspends 90 pounds from little finger then extends to arm’s length for a 10-second hold.
Hepburn’s heavy lifting system, combined with equally heavy food consumption, saw Doug rapidly gain size and earn him the title, the “first of the large weightlifters”.
How large are we talking here?
On October 17th, 1950, strongman and strength historian, Maurice Jones, officially recorded Doug's body measurements thus:
- Height - 5 feet 8.5 inches
- Weight - 250 pounds
- Neck - 18 inches
- Biceps - 20 inches
- Chest - 52.5 inches
- Waist - 41 inches
- Hips - 44 inches
- Thigh - 28 inches.
And here’s the thing… Doug’s size increased in direct proportion to his strength - the stronger he got, the more he grew - so by late 1950, and weighing 260 pounds, the young Samson’s biceps stretched the tape to a staggering 23-inches!
Like we said last week, if you’re looking to get big and strong, Doug Hepburn's super-simple method really does work like a charm.
