Hi Friend,
“Go heavy or go home,” is more than just a catchy saying. If the latest surprising research is right, ‘going heavy’ just might be the key to a fitter and more muscular you.
To learn more, I want to introduce you to Michael Mosely.
For those that don't know, Mosely is an award-winning science journalist and documentary maker. His TV shows have won an RTS, an EMMY, and he was named medical journalist of the year by the British Medical Association.
His most recent work includes ‘The Truth About Getting Fit’, where he teams up with scientists whose latest research explores many of the exercise myths, and shows how you can achieve your fitness goals by doing less.
The respected science journalist makes a surprising discovery on his latest programme. He asks, “What’s the best way to build muscle?”
To unravel this puzzle, Mosely travels to Glasgow where researchers want to test if it’s best to lift heavy or light weights.
The small experiment took five recruits and used an unusual training method. The volunteers lifted a heavy weight with one arm and a light weight with the other, then repeated the same protocol with the legs.
Each of the gym rats did two training sessions a week for six weeks. The researchers measured the volunteers’ strength levels at the start of the experiment and compared these numbers at the end.
On retesting, the findings were fascinating...
The Glasgow researchers discovered it made NO DIFFERENCE if the test subjects lifted heavy or light.
In fact, each of the volunteers grew stronger in both sets of limbs by the SAME AMOUNT.
That's right... the increases in strength were EXACTLY THE SAME regardless of the weight used.
But which type of lifting did the volunteers prefer — the heavy or the light weights?
Well, here’s a further surprise for you…
When quizzed, ALL the volunteers voted for the heavy weights because it doesn’t take as long as lifting light.
More muscle with less work? You betcha!
Until next time,
Keep Squatting!
