Hi Friend,
Last Monday, we talked about the perfect exercise and explained why striving for progress is the REAL secret to your continued weight training success.
We also showed how progress can be achieved by:
- Adding more weight to the bar,
- Performing more reps in each exercise,
- Doing more work sets of each exercise.
All good stuff, I’m sure you’ll agree.
But what we didn’t mention last week, was how density training can be a great way to make real progress, too.
Density Training
The concept of density training is new for a lot of folks. If you haven’t come across it before, density training simply refers to doing the same amount of work in less time.
For example: if you performed 100 Hindu Squats in 5 minutes, then found you finished the same workout next week in 4 minutes, you would have improved your fitness in the realm of density.
So even though the weight hasn’t changed and you didn’t add more reps, you just completed the same workout in less time — improved density.
Coach Brian D. Johnston is a fan. With over 30 years experience in the Iron Game, this 50-year-old muscle building maverick heralds "high density training" for anyone wishing to consistently enhance their muscular appearance through resistance training.
He has this to say:
“While experimenting over the past decade with condensed volume approaches, it became obvious that training with a focus on ‘density’ was the final frontier when it came to bodybuilding for the natural trainee. It was a way of stimulating optimal growth potential, while adjusting one’s rate-of-frequency and the overall demands per workout.
“In effect, whether focusing only on one exercise or multiple exercises per body part, or whether training to failure all the time or some of the time, much could be accomplished in short order. Yes, it is possible to condense a huge training impact in a matter of minutes and take your physique to a different plateau (or keep it there as you age).”
For a lot of folks, training with a focus on density can be an effective way to strive for progress and a real game-changer.
