Hi Friend,
Everyone enjoys a bit of good-natured rivalry. But is competition crushing your gains? Testing yourself against others can be a great source of motivation, yet it also comes at considerable cost.
We’ve all done it. As kids growing up, we competed at push-ups in the playground or struggled on the monkey bars for chins.
And as adults, things haven’t really changed…
In the modern fitness arena, we still do it — only now we compete to see who can complete a circuit of exercises in the fastest time possible.
But here’s the thing. Even though this type of training is fun, it also hides an unfortunate secret.
You see, challenging someone to do something with as much speed as possible is okay, but it comes at a cost. The result is, you rush to finish your workout by any means necessary which inevitably leads to sacrificing optimal exercise performance.
And therein lies the problem.
There is a huge difference between performing an exercise quickly and performing an exercise effectively so you are able to build your body.
For sure, if your goal is sports-orientated, speed is a good thing. However, when your goal is to grow your physique, you have to move slower and create more tension in your muscles.
The two things are very different horses. And that’s the takeaway message this week. Forget competing for speed like you did when you were a kid in the playground, and instead start using your muscles more effectively.
Until next time,
