Everyone knows the importance of sleep for remaining healthy, but did you also know your napping habits influence your body weight too? It's true. Maintaining a normal body weight is next to impossible when you are missing out on your valuable shut-eye.
Here are 3 reasons why:
- Sleep deprivation affects blood sugar levels,
- Lack of sleep increases the stress hormone cortisol,
- Bedtime blues reduces the production of leptin (a hormone that signals your stomach is full).
Trying to get enough sleep isn't easy. And when you are busy? Snatching the required sack time can be challenging, especially if you are stressed.
So what is a sleepy head to do?
Why not practice these 3 simple steps instead:
- SCHEDULE SLEEP. Create a routine for getting enough sleep. In the same way you plan your workouts, you need to schedule sleep time to effectively manage stress. (Incase you didn't know, stress can play havoc with your body fat levels.)
- DAIRY DREAMTIME. Try a calming cup of warm milk before bedtime. Why milk? This nighttime favourite contains the enzyme tryptophan, a natural sedative. Also, the body absorbs calcium better at night.
- SNATCH NAPS. Take naps. A nap will help you shut down for a while, then, when you awake, you are refreshed and ready to go. Imagine each nap is like rebooting your computer. And remember, your naps don't have to be long. Even a short snooze of ten or so minutes can supply you with an instant pop of energy.
