Hi Friend,
“Act your age, mamma. Not your shoe size,” sang Prince on his 80s hit ‘Kiss’. And that's great advice. But how old are you REALLY?
“That's easy!” I hear you cry. And if you're like most folks, you point to your passport or brandish your birth certificate by way of proof.
Ugh-huh. Sorry. But that number you're pointing to isn't your REAL age. The figure listed in these documents only records the calendar years you have spent on this planet.
For a clearer and more complete picture of your age, we must turn to science.
Chronological vs Biological Age To get a more vivid understanding of how old you REALLY are, we need to look at the biomarkers of ageing - things like muscle mass, strength, sex hormone levels, blood pressure, bone density, hearing, immune system vitality, the ability to use and metabolise sugar, body temperature regulation, and even cognitive function.
For sure, that's a long old list. But this list is like putting your body under a microscope where you get to examine all the science stuff in pinpoint detail.
And it's this detail - the biomarkers of ageing - that gives you your biological age, as opposed to the chronological age of when you were born.
Incase you didn't know already, your lifestyle impacts these numbers. Things like diet, sleep, and the types of exercise you perform. So having recently turned 50, I was curious to see how I rated: was I younger or older than my half-century? A quick online survey provided the answer.
Now remember, these surveys aren't hard science. They're just a cool way for you to assess how well you are living. Also, these survey numbers aren't set in stone; your biological age, unlike your chronological age, is malleable and can be adjusted by any lifestyle changes you decide to make…Indeed, simply adding the right regular physical exercise like strength training can reverse many of the typical nasties that accelerate biological age: things like high blood pressure, excess body fat, problematic sugar metabolism, and the chronic effects of muscle loss.
So are you ready to start acting your age?

PS. I calculated my biological age and discovered I'm 24. Not bad for a fella who's 50 chronologically! How did you do?
