Hi Friend,
I have a question for you: if you could hop into a time machine and travel back to meet your younger self, what changes would you make to your future training?
Looking back, I would have done things differently. Top of my list? I would have begun deadlifting seriously and made deads the lynchpin of my training.
What else?
In addition to making this mighty movement (and its variations) the cornerstone of my routines, I would have also made it my mission to push the weights up steadily from month to month until I was able to perform double-bodyweight deadlifts.
Sounds easy?
Maybe so, yet you might be amazed by how many trainees struggle to do this for years, if at all.
This basic test of body strength is a useful target to shoot for. But don't just take my word for it. Strength coach Dan John believes the same thing, which is why he lists double-bodyweight deadlifts among his "10 things every lifter should be able to do."
And here's the really cool part: during the process of getting stronger in the deadlift, you will improve in other fundamental movements, too.
That's right. It's like a domino effect. Increase your deadlift performance, and watch your other numbers fly up.
And that's not all; because there are so many deadlift variations to choose from, there's an excellent chance you can find the perfect deadlift fit for you.
For example, I particularly like the Romanian deadlift and will commonly cycle between this and its more traditional cousin.
Mike Robertson is also a huge fan. Here is what the Director of Custom Athletics has to say about this monster move from Transylvania:
"...an excellent lift for developing strength and muscle mass... Master this exercise and you'll be well on your way to becoming a weight-room god."
And from John Paul Catanzaro, a kinesiologist and professional fitness consultant:
"Once you get the hang of them, they're addictive. It's like owning an Apple computer in that, 'Once you go Mac, you never go back!'"
And the best part? The Romanian deadlift is the perfect fit for any time-strapped trainee seeking to make solid gains.
