Subject: Listening isn't as easy anymore...

I would bet that most leaders are doing their fair share of multitasking and lacking focus in virtual meetings these days, including, unfortunately one-on-one calls with those they lead.

How do I know this? Because I have been the recipient of such calls in my not-too-distant past. If you closely pay attention you will know as well. The awkward silence that makes you feel you are the only one present. The long uncomfortable pause before responding to your question, followed up by asking you to repeat it. The keyboard periodically hammering in the background. The loud restful breathing and sometimes even snoring!

Yep, we know when someone isn’t paying attention, don’t we? Those you are talking to know as well.

With more and more virtual interactions occurring in business than ever before, listening has never been more important.

How are you doing? Are you listening? Would those you are leading say you are listening to them? Here are a few tips to help you listen better virtually.

1. Put all distractions away. If you aren't using your cell phone, put it in another room. If you aren't using your computer, put it in sleep mode. If your door is open, close it. Fewer distractions, means better listening.

2. Make eye contact. If you are on a video call, making eye contact is a lot easier of course. But if you are not on video, then see the person you are talking to in your mind and look them in the eyes. Nod you head, lean in, tilt your head to one side and even smile. If you are on video, this is of course is much easier as well, but if not, still do it as if the person is sitting right in front of you.

3. Restate and clarify. Check for understanding. Clarify what is being said. Ask clarifying questions, "So how did it make you feel?" and "Is this what you are meaning by this?"

Virtual leadership requires a doubling of efforts in everything, especially listening. Listening is an act that shows you care and if you care about your people, they will care about their work.

May you all have a peaceful and safe weekend!
