From the Executive Director's Corner

As we approach Financial Literacy Month this April, we are thrilled to announce some exciting news about MoneySKILL!

In 2021, the AFSA Education Foundation partnered with Dr. Carly Urban at Montana State University to assess the impact of our MoneySKILL personal finance program. The evaluation measured changes in financial behaviors and knowledge, specifically among middle school, high school, and college MoneySKILL users between 2014 and 2020. The results were very encouraging and showed significant improvements for students completing MoneySKILL courses.

Recently, we reengaged Dr. Urban to conduct an updated MoneySKILL evaluation to include data through 2022 to understand how the effectiveness of MoneySKILL persisted through the COVID-19 pandemic and better understand for whom the curriculum is most effective. We are pleased to share that the results continue to show that students are improving their financial knowledge after completing MoneySKILL courses (by 65% on average). Furthermore, the evaluation found that students using MoneySKILL and not using MoneySKILL are very similar across economic and demographic characteristics, suggesting that educators select the curriculum for a diverse set of students.

We are eager to share the full results of the updated evaluation during Financial Literacy Month and encourage you to keep an eye on our social media accounts and website for more information when it is released.

We continue to be impressed by the variety of educators (including parents and caregivers) who are committed to providing learners with access to quality financial education through MoneySKILL. If you are planning any special MoneySKILL activities during Financial Literacy Month, please reach out to us and let us know!

We look forward to sharing more MoneySKILL updates with you throughout the year.

Best wishes,

Rhonda Ashburn

Ask MoneySKILL!
How can I make sure my students aren’t ever automatically prompted to retake a MoneySKILL module?

When setting up your MoneySKILL class, make sure to leave the Module Retake Percent field blank. By doing this, students will not ever be prompted to retake a module regardless of what quiz score they receive. Alternately, you can enable automatic retakes by entering a minimum quiz grade threshold in this field.
Is there a way to manually allow students to retake a particular MoneySKILL module?

Yes. In the Students section of your class, you’ll see “Retake” links next to each student username. Clicking on this link will provide you with the option to manually enable (or disable) retakes for a particular module
Does the AFSA Education Foundation offer a printable answer key to the MoneySKILL quizzes?

No. At this time, to help protect the integrity of the MoneySKILL curriculum, we do not provide printable answer keys. However, instructors can click on the “Preview Curriculum” link in their dashboards to review the content and quiz questions in each module at any time.
Announcements
Are you using the Reality Check simulation?  Did you know MoneySKILL includes a free Reality Check simulation for students? By default, all MoneySKILL classes include this free interactive activity that gives students a chance to map out the financial requirements of certain lifestyles. Instructors can check it out in the “Preview Curriculum” section of their MoneySKILL dashboard.
Interested in more personal finance content for your class?  Check out our newly updated MoneySKILL Learning Activities Per Module Teacher Guide in the “Resources” section of your instructor dashboard for hundreds of additional free personal finance classroom activities organized to support all 37 MoneySKILL modules.
FREE budget personality quiz! The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) is offering a free budget personality quiz among other interactive tools that complement the MoneySKILL curriculum.
Are you interested in a new opportunity to showcase your financial educator skills, earn some extra money, and help promote MoneySKILL?  We are currently recruiting MoneySKILL instructors to serve as MoneySKILL Mentors at various regional educator conferences. Mentors would be expected to host MoneySKILL exhibit booths at conferences (such as state career tech events, Jump$tart Personal Financial Literacy activities, Family and Consumer Sciences conferences, and more) and potentially deliver short MoneySKILL workshops. MoneySKILL Mentors will earn a competitive daily stipend based on conference exhibit and presentation duties as well as reimbursement for per diem expenses. At this time, we are particularly interested in individuals working in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Vermont, but encourage anyone interested to reach out regardless of location.
