Chiropractic care is a relatively new form of healthcare, and many people unfortunately have their doubts about what it can offer. Those doubts tend to be magnified when it comes to kids. It’s natural that we want what’s best for our kids, and that trying something new can be scary.

Here are some common myths about children and chiropractic:
  1. Chiropractors use the same techniques to adjust kids and babies as they do for adults.  This is the big myth that often prevents parents from trying chiropractic for their kids. The truth is that chiropractors don’t use the same force or techniques to adjust kids since their bodies don’t need that kind of force. For instance, an infant only requires the force needed to check a tomato for ripeness.

  2. Children don’t need chiropractic care. Chiropractors are nervous system specialists, which is important when you understand that the nervous system is in charge of absolutely everything in the body. Think about how much time babies spend cramped in the womb; how difficult even a straightforward birth is on a baby’s spine; all the stresses of growing and learning all these new things like walking, running, and playing sports. All these things have an impact on the spine, which houses the nervous system. Children respond extremely well to chiropractic care as they typically don’t have as many years of trauma like adults do.

  3. Chiropractic care for kids is new. Chiropractic care for kids is no newer than chiropractic itself. D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, stated how important it is to check a child’s spine and throughout life to ensure that there isn’t any nervous system interference.

  4. Chiropractors don’t collaborate with paediatricians or medical doctors. Many parents are worried that they can only see a chiropractor or a medical doctor, not both. Ideally, every child would have both a medical doctor and a doctor of chiropractic. Both sides want what’s best for the kiddos, and it’s important that we work together to ensure that. Chiropractors tend to see kids more often than a medical doctor does, and so they often catch any issues they find before it becomes a problem. If it’s a bigger concern, they can express that to the parents or directly to the medical doctor if they have permission from the parents to do so.

It’s important to find a chiropractor who is comfortable with working with kids and has an interest in that field. Many pediatric-focused chiropractors take extra courses to expand their knowledge and specialize in the field.
Always remember, chiropractors can and do help their patients regardless of how young or how old they are. No matter the age, everyone can benefit from an optimally functioning nervous system!
