Subject: Leadership Lessons from the “Best of” CIO Whisperers

6 tech leaders emphasize the human side of the equation

For a recent episode of the podcast, we pulled together some of the most replayed, re-shared, and resonant moments, based on audience data. As I began to look through similar data from my CIO Whisperers column, it was fascinating to see the common themes that emerged.

Back in 1984 when Ouellette & Associates coined the phrase “Developing the Human Side of Technology,” we were a bit of an outlier. Today, the notion seems almost prophetic, and based on the experiences of the best CIOs around, it’s never been more relevant.

Among the most popular interviews from the column since 2022 are my conversations with Dwayne Allen, CTO of Unisys; Mona Bates, VP of digital technology and CIO at Collins Aerospace; Rob Carter, CIO at FedEx; Sabina Ewing,  global CIO and VP of business and technology Services (BTS) at Abbott; CIO legend Andi Karaboutis; and Barry Shurkey, CIO at NTT Data North America.

The overarching thread across all of these interviews is that technical/digital savvy is table stakes. What separates the great leaders — the ones who create lasting impact — are the differentiators on the human side. Read on for highlights from these six “best-of” interviews, with insights on topics such as people-first leadership, business-value orientation, intentional communication and culture, and more.

Coming Up Wed., Sept. 10: Dr. Lisa Palmer and Ash Rangan

Next Whisperers Wednesday, I’m sitting down with two of the sharpest minds in the artificial intelligence space to discuss how organizations can break free from the “messy middle” and win with AI. Dr. Lisa Palmer is the founder of DrLisa.AI, an advisory firm that helps organizations unlock AI’s business value through actionable strategies. Ash Rangan has written one of the great CIO-to-CEO stories, bringing his wealth of experience to fintech company DoubleCheck.

Both are former practitioners who have walked in the CIO’s shoes, and both are authors of must-read new books that shine light on how to lead with clarity, confidence, and conviction in the AI era. Tune in September 10 for a deep dive on governance, storytelling, and the road out of the messy middle.
