From puberty, young women are taught to expect cramps, heavy bleeding, and PMS as their monthly reality. But what we were not taught is that each of these symptoms are a red flag, a cause for alarm, a sign that our body needs attention. We faithfully go to our doctors when the pain seems a bit too much or the bleeding too heavy, only to be offered birth control as a remedy that it was never designed to be.
While birth control does work as contraception, it has also been dispensed like lollipops whenever a woman complains of period pain or heavy bleeding. Instead of helping a woman understand and heal her body, she becomes a lifelong customer of Big Pharma. The pipeline from pain pills to birth control, fertility treatment to surgery, are a profitable path when bodies of colour are not seen as valuable and worth protecting.
Attempts to sterilize and euthanize bodies of color are a historical reality that looks different, but is essentially the same. Capitalism is not invested in our wellness, nor is it invested in true wealth. Profiting off of our ignorance and illness has been the playbook, but now it’s time we take charge.
When I wrote my first book, Peaceful Periods: Holistic Womb Care for Teens [www.honoredwomb.com/pre-order-book], I made an intention to share every holistic tool and resource available to every reader, so no girl or woman accepts painful periods and hormonal chaos anymore. We think just a higher dose of pain medication or heavier pads are the answer, but the reality is that we are masking a festering problem instead of treating it. And after decades of simply enduring, you miss out on years of having healthy menstrual cycles, hormonal balances, and easeful fertility.
Sacred Bloodlines: Reclaiming Our Wombs, Protecting Our Fertility, is not just a class – it’s a call to action. Our community’s life force is literally being drained from our bodies, our wombs cut out in record numbers, and we can’t just sit by as witnesses.
Rally your daughters, your partners, and your kin. It’s time to renew our commitment to thriving life and protecting thriving wombs.
