Helen McHugh, RN, BSN
Founder, Nurturing Nurses

Helen spent over 40 years in nursing, most of it in oncology, hospice, and palliative care, sitting with patients and families through some of life's hardest moments.

Along the way she carried the same emotional weight she now helps other nurses name: exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and the quiet habit of putting her own needs last.

Rather than treating burnout as something to push through, Helen built a different path. She's trained in integrative imagery, holds a Hospice & Palliative Care Nursing Certification, and belongs to both the American Holistic Nurses Association and the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association. That background shaped Nurturing Nurses, a space for hospice and palliative care nurses to feel supported and reconnect with themselves, not just avoid burnout, but recover from it.

For NNBA members doing emotionally demanding work of their own, Helen's path is a reminder that sustaining a career in care means building in real support, not just more willpower.

A Note From Nena

Hi Nurses,

October is here, and with it, the official start of Q4!

This is usually the stretch where the year either comes together or slips away, so it's worth taking stock right now: what's working, what's been sitting on the back burner, and what you actually want to close out before December hits.

Sometimes the biggest shift in a business doesn't come from a grand plan, but it may start from from watching someone else rebuild theirs and realizing you have just what it takes to do the same.

And a quick reminder if it's not already on your calendar: Virginia Beach, September 16-18, 2027, for the Nurse Entrepreneurship & Career Alternatives Conference! Stay tuned for more details.

With gratitude,

Nena

Sell Without Apologizing

Many nurse entrepreneurs soften their rate before a client even reacts:

"I know this might be a lot, but..."
"Feel free to say no."

It signals doubt before the client has a chance to decide for themselves.

Your challenge is to state your price plainly, once, and let the silence sit instead of filling it with a disclaimer.

Here's how to make it easy:

  • Say the number, then stop talking. Resist the urge to justify it immediately

  • Practice the sentence out loud beforehand so it doesn't come out apologetic in the moment

  • If a client pushes back, respond with what's included, not a lower price by default

  • Remember: hesitation reads as uncertainty about your own value, not humility

Confidence in your price is part of the service you're offering. Clients trust providers who trust themselves.
