I shared my journey with nursing students and the lessons I wish I learned sooner.
| | Yesterday I had the chance to talk with a group of nursing students at my alma mater and it brought me right back to the beginning of my journey as a nurse. | | | |

Yup, that's me. Bright eyed and bushy tailed. But after graduation, it was defeating to realize that I was not cut out for bedside nursing. I didn't enjoy it. I remember feeling like I had done all of that hard work for nothing. I questioned if I had made the wrong choice and if I was even good enough to be a nurse.
What I know now, and what I wish someone had told me then, is that nursing can take you so many places.
Bedside nurses are imperative, and they are some of the most incredible people I know. At the same time, there are countless opportunities outside of bedside, and choosing a different path does not make you less of a nurse. It means you are creating a career that fits who you are, and I know this because I stand beside so many nurses who have done exactly that! | | | | Being able to share my experience with students yesterday felt like such a full circle moment. If even one of them left with more hope about what their future can look like, then that means everything to me.
💙 The bedside can be a chapter, but it does not have to be the whole book. |
