NGLA Conference Registration Scholarship Coming Soon!
NGLA raises money annually through a silent auction to support several student registration scholarships to attend the NGLA conference each year. NGLA also offers a scholarship for a campus coming to the NGLA conference for the first time or after a hiatus.

In partnership with NALFO, for at least one of the individual scholarships offered, priority will be granted to members of culturally-based organizations.

This year NGLA will also offer scholarships to attend the Advisor Academy offered in conjunction with the annual conference as well.

More information about the application process is coming soon!

Each year, the NGLA Annual Conference is run with the support of a team of student volunteers. This experience is a great opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to gain conference management experience; network with fraternity and sorority students from all over the Northeast; and network with professionals working for colleges and universities, fraternity and sorority headquarters, and professional speakers. New this year, student staff members will also have a mentoring experience with the NGLA Board of Directors to gain additional professional insights and coaching throughout their student staff appointment.

Interested students must complete the application and have a recommendation letter submitted from a fraternity or sorority advisor (for undergraduate students) or a supervisor (for graduate students).

Submit your NGLA Student Staff Application by December 14, 2017.

Please email NGLA Student Staff Coordinator Joe Gurreri with any questions.

NGLA encourages all students, advisors, and campuses to participate in the awards process. Each year, NGLA recognizes campuses, chapters, councils, and individuals for their outstanding accomplishments over the past year. Apply for an award by January 19, 2018.

The Awards Committee is also looking for judges! If you are a professional, graduate student, or volunteer looking for an opportunity to get involved with NGLA, please consider applying to be an a NGLA Awards Judge.

Please email NGLA Awards Chair Sara Diem with any questions.

Volunteer of the Month
This month we are recognizing the Educational Programs Committee for all their hard work and dedication to the Association through the program selection process. During the last several weeks, the Educational Programs Committee, chaired by Tara Leigh Sands and Ryan Cole, worked diligently to select the very best educational opportunities for this year's Annual Conference. Without their hard work and dedication, students in the Northeast would not have exposure to such innovative programming. Thank you for all you have done to enhance the mission of NGLA!

Additional committee members include: Anna Baldasarre, Molly Bennett, Meredith Bielaska, Corey Bosco, Michael Giacalone, Brieanna Hodskins, Kyle Miller, Kim Monteaux De Freitas, Travis Roberts, Taylor Sevik, and Chelsea Wheeler

The Fraternity Closet
Sean Conklin, Program Assistant at Florida Atlantic University

Most every chapter in our time will have at least one member who is, at least, curious about different sexuality and gender expression. According to a recent CDC study done across the country on high school students, at least 11.3% of young people do not identify as heterosexual.

As both members of fraternity and sorority life as well as professionals, we are aware of the value of diversity in our memberships. LGBTQ+ students, however, provide a unique challenge in that they are not always as visible, and their issues are not always as understood as other minority groups. Due to the strict gender norms most social organizations enforce, someone who does not adhere to those norms would be less likely to join, or less likely to show that part of themselves and just act like the others. If chapter culture is unappealing to LGBTQ+ members, how can chapters recruit more members to help influence its culture?

NGLA educates leaders from a variety of fraternal experiences to transform and empower their community and align actions with values.
