Is Underwater Basket Weaving Really a College Major?

It’s not exactly a major, but it is a class you can take at Rutgers University, according to Rutgers Today. And even if it were a major, it would most likely NOT be one of the lifetime moneymakers like Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (according to glassdoor.com).

Did you know the decision of what your student chooses to major in could be a $1M decision? That's According to Doug Webber, a professor of Economics at Temple University.

Check out our Facebook Live with Doug and learn more about the impact any college major has on lifetime earnings in How Your College Impacts Your Lifetime Earings.

Need Help Finding Merit Scholarships?

Are you in a similar situation to this parent from our Paying For College 101 group:

"I am hoping I have missed some obvious place where I can do this....I am currently helping my DS make a spreadsheet that lets us compare schools on these basic variables--avg gpa, avg ACT, admissions rate, net price. I cannot do this on naviance, college navigator, niche, collegehunch or big future. Help! We have spent so much time manually entering information and are barely half way done. Is there some service that will let me do this painlessly? TIA"

If you're looking for a solution to help you organize all the data you need to do a thorough college search, then consider our College Data Spreadsheet(click to see a sample).  It combines data from IPEDS (government data) and Common Data Set information in ONE place to sort, filter, and compare colleges the way you should to find affordable colleges and those that are generous with merit or need based aid.

Here's what one member said about the spreasheet...

"This is really worth it. The amount of time saved makes it so worth the money. I can't even tell you how many times I've gone back to the master spreadsheet and now I've made scaled-down ones with just the colleges that are still in the running with just the data we find most important for both my daughters."

FAFSA MISTAKES TO AVOID
FAFSA Is Coming…FAFSA is Coming! (Quick, cue the theme from “Jaws!”)

Filling it out correctly is vital, and overwhelming…that’s part of the reason why it strikes fear into the hearts of parents. You’ve got more than a couple of weeks before October 1, the first day you can submit your FAFSA, but it’s not too early to go over the checklist we’ve provided in Avoid These Common FAFSA Mistakes. We don’t mean to be too dramatic, but think of it as your FAFSA lifeboat.

ONLINE COLLEGE ESSAY WORKSHOP
We're offering an online college essay workshop with Brad Schiller, of Prompt, to help students figure out what is compelling about themselves, how to select content, and how to structure their essays.

Thursday, August 23rd at 8:30pm EST.

At the end of the workshop students will walk away with a plan for what to write in their personal statement, along with a discount for additional hours of essay review.

This workshop is for students and parents. Brad wants parents involved in the workshop so they have a better understanding of how their student should approach writing essays.

This workshop is limited to 25 participants!

It will be live, online and interactive where participants can be seen and heard. Your student can also submit one essay. Brad will pick a few to review (anonymously) as examples.
