WHAT IS THE COMMON DATA SET?
Common Data Set vs Sausage Making
What the heck is the Common Data Set…and do we care? Well, one of our fans flat-out told us he would rather learn about how sausages are made than find out how the rankings like the one US News & World Report feature are done. For that guy there’s this.

And for all others who would like to know where all the information comes from when you research and compare colleges to each other, there’s this…What Is the Common Date Set?

After understanding how valuable the Common Data Set can be for researching colleges, you may want to consider our College Data Tool. This spreadsheet includes all the Common Data Set information that is publicly available, along with IPEDS data you can use to sort, filter and compare colleges in your quest for creating a college list with schools that can offer your student the most merit scholarships.

Good For the Goose
It IS true that what one college freshman may consider to be “essential,” another one may consider to be dispensable, however, we have it on good authority that the items on our list of dorm essentials will be given a thumb’s up by all of the newbies you encounter on move-in day and beyond.

Surprisingly, it’s not a big list, because we are huge proponents of the philosophy that the less you spend now on unnecessary “stuff,” the more $$ you have to spend on a nice gift to reward yourself for not sobbing as you leave your little gosling behind.

 Follow the Yellow Brick Road…NOT!

One could only wish that a journey to finding an affordable college was as simple as Dorothy’s journey to Oz was, but unfortunately, it’s not. (And really, her journey was not all that “just put one foot in front of the other” simple either.)

The REAL search is more akin to that of the members of “Mission Impossible.” Along the way, you might encounter road blocks and “danger,” but if you accept that mission, like Mr. Phelps, in the end you will be successful. As is often the case, hearing about other families’ experiences can be of great assistance. We especially think this family’s story of finding an affordable college will help you find your way.
