Merit Scholarship Statistics

If you're a family that's not eligible for needs based aid, it's important to maximize your efforts to find merit scholarships as your best source of free money.

Here are some statistics you should know....
  • Colleges award $11B in merit based scholarships to students.
  • 87.9% of freshmen at private colleges receive merit aid.*
  • The average merit aid (or tuition discount) covered 56.3% of tuition & fees.*
  • The average merit scholarship was $23,942.

With those type of stats, don't you think it's worth spending time to know how to find colleges that can offer your student merit scholarships?

We think finding merit scholarships, and colleges that are more g
enerous with their money, is so important to understand, that we're hosting a masterclass webinar devoted solely to this topic.

As part of registering for the webinar, you’ll receive your own copy of the Full Tuition/Full Ride Scholarship List, created by Wendy Nelson. This list was recently updated, as of September 2017.

If you're interested in getting started on how to find merit scholarships, read How To Follow The Money.

As always, our mission is to help families understand the financial aid process and ways to pay for college. We believe families need to become educated consumers of higher ed to make more informed decisions and help their students and themselves avoid student debt.

I hope to see you Thursday night,
Debbie

QUESTIONS ABOUT PAYING FOR COLLEGE?

Advice from a member of our Paying For College 101 group.....

"I know there is concern going around about students receiving merit scholarship/ financial aid. I have an only child and have only been to this rodeo one time last year. I wanted to share what was helpful and my findings!
Can I give you all a big hint??
  1. If you want the best merit/financial aid possible, don't apply where the masses are applying! Find a school that every other car doesn't have their decal in the window!
  2. Read the book recommended on this page " Where You Go To College Is Not Who You'll Be"
  3. Take a close look at schools that are less selective but also have good graduation rates! There are so many good colleges out there who want student's just like yours with money to offer!!!
  4. Apply to truly need blind schools. If the school says they are need blind , yet also states they consider financial need in their admissions process, they aren't really need blind!
  5. If you have a high EFC and the school requires also the CSS profile, chances are the CSS profile will work to your disadvantage. The questions asked are extremely invasive and my son withdrew his apps from two schools because of it. Just wasn't worth the time and effort when they weren't even his top choices anyway.
This is just my two cents!!! I can't wait to hear where all your kids end up! Hopefully someone will start a thread to share where their student selected and the great scholarships and financial aid received!   Cheers!"
