Handcrafted designs, social media branding lead to success for jewelry entrepreneur
Green Bay Press-Gazette
Alyssa Jones, owner of Alyssa and Anna Fine Jewelry in Appleton and Oshkosh, never had that “a ha” moment when she decided to start a business. Growing up, she learned the craft of creating jewelry while spending hours in her dad’s studio and never considered a different career.

Her dad, Thieu Nguyen, fled the Vietnam War and immigrated from Saigon to America in 1976 when he was 14 years old. He grew up to become a master goldsmith and inventor of a jeweler’s bench tool that is sold throughout the....

Tea for children? Sturgeon Bay business offers kid-friendly brews for fairy tale dates
Green Bay Press-Gazette
STURGEON BAY - Making up fairy tales about princesses for her daughter led Mercedes Wadkins to hold mother-daughter tea parties — a tradition as old as children's tea sets.

Their story differs, however, when she realized nobody was making an actual tea for children to drink in these parties. So, she filled that niche in the beverage market.

Wadkins started Bellasia Tea three years ago in Sturgeon Bay, marketing the beverages as healthy drinks with fruit and spice tastes for children with....

Report: Outdoor recreation is worth $7.8B to Wisconsin economy
WPR
The pandemic has driven Americans outdoors.

In Wisconsin, that's meant a spike in demand for bikes and hiking trails, fishing licenses and state park admissions. As the state enters the heart of the winter recreation season, state officials are hoping to build on the gains Wisconsin saw in the summer and fall, and make plans to keep the sector growing even after the pandemic is over.

Outdoor recreation contributes $7.8 billion to Wisconsin's gross domestic product, according to a first-of-its-kind report from the state Office of Outdoor Recreation released in the fall. That includes money spent on outdoor pursuits from golfing to snowmobiling, but also the economic contributions of....

Our digital lives drive a brick-and-mortar boom in data centers
StarTribune
The shift to digital work and play from home, hastened by the pandemic, has wreaked havoc on commercial real estate. But experts believe it has also generated one surprising bright spot for the industry: data centers.

The growing reliance on cloud-based technology — and the big, blocky buildings that house its hardware — has created greater opportunities for developers and investors as businesses and consumers gobble up more data in a world that has become increasingly connected.

"Our houses are connected, our cars are connected, our streetlights and parking meters are connected, and every single one of those connections is...

UMOS awarded state contracts to operate transitional jobs programs (including in Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Oconto and Marinette counties)
BizTimes
Milwaukee-based UMOS, Inc. has been awarded two new contracts totaling $1.87 million to operate transitional jobs programs in six additional Wisconsin counties.

The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families contracts include a $595,000 grant to run the program in Kenosha County and a $1.275 million grant to operate the program in Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Oconto and Marinette counties.

The Transitional Jobs Program provides subsidized employment for unemployed individuals who are ex-offenders, have child support orders, have child welfare reunification plans or are former foster youth. UMOS pays the employees’ wages for the first 6 months of on-the-job training at an area employer, after which the employee joins the....

Wisconsin-made smartphone app can help you recycle better
WPR
A Wisconsin-made smartphone app that helps people recycle better and track their composting is expanding its reach.

Michelle Goetsch launched Betterbin in May 2018. The Wausau-based company's app allows people in participating communities to scan barcodes on groceries and household products to find out whether or not the items can be recycled where they live.

Recycling rules can vary a lot from place to place and what is recyclable isn't always intuitive. In many cities, for example, cardboard milk cartons and the plastic containers used for....
