Farmers turn to edible food waste amid increased production costs
SPECTRUM NEWS 1

GREENLEAF — For the past few years, the cows at Wiese Brothers farm near Greenleaf have munched through several different ingredients in their feed.

Dan Wiese, a partner in the farm, said that includes everything from pizza crusts to barley, from beer production to cranberries and cotton seed.

“Rather than a lot of that stuff ending up in the landfill, cattle are a wonderful use for that feed, both dairy and beef cattle,” he said...

Local companies manufacturing younger workforce
DOOR COUNTY DAILY NEWS

DOOR COUNTY -- You will not find a shortage of ways local manufacturers are working to help foster the next generation of employees. Last month, businesses throughout Door County, including those in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park, hosted high school students for Manufacturing Day, where they got a chance to go behind the scenes to see current employees and their machines go to work.

Earlier this month, Sevastopol became the latest high school to receive significant upgrades to its technical education department with new machines. Much like D&S Machine and NEW Plastics in Luxemburg did for school districts in Kewaunee and Manitowoc counties, NEW Industries helped finance some of the machines that went into the building, and they will also provide some in-person instruction from current employees. NEW Industries owner Chris Moore says they are willing to do about anything to help generate interest in the manufacturing field, and he believes it is working...

Suamico couple works to bring tiny homes for veterans to northeastern Wisconsin
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY -- A few weeks ago, Americans honored past and present military members on Veterans Day. And while many pause to recognize veterans one day a year, Gail and Kim Nohr of Suamico have made it their year-round mission.

Gail, a U.S. Navy veteran, and her husband, Kim, a retired union contractor, have started a nonprofit business called Veterans 1st of NEW (www.veterans1stnew.com). Their primary goal is to provide a safe and supportive veterans community of tiny homes for those in need of transitional and affordable housing.

Gail explained: “My last job, where I spent five years, was working at the Brown County Veterans Service Office. I took calls daily from veterans desperately looking for shelter and affordable housing, and had a hard time helping them. The problem is only getting worse; I felt that I needed to do something about that.”...

Interview: Fox Cities PAC turns 20
WBAY

APPLETON  -- This Friday, while many of us are still digesting our Thanksgiving meals, the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center is celebrating a birthday.

The center opened its doors to the public 20 years ago and has been bringing live performing arts to the community ever since.

We talked with president and CEO Maria Van Laanen about the PAC’s anniversary and another milestone that it recently passed.

We also asked Van Laanen how the Fox Cities PAC bounced back after the COVID-19 shutdowns, whether crowds are still craving live theater, and what’s in store for performances in the next few months...

Veterans to pick free Christmas tree during Trees 4 Vets event in Oconto County
WLUK

OCONTO COUNTY -- It's being called a way to say Merry Christmas, and thank you to veterans for their service to our country. The seventh annual Trees 4 Vets event in northern Oconto County is Sunday.

With about 30,000 evergreens growing on the 30-acre site in the Town of Breed, Uncle Paul's Christmas Tree Farm has a lot of pines to offer. And for a few hours on Sunday afternoon, area veterans will be able to take one of these fir trees home.

"Folks can just come out here, go through the property, as you can see some beautiful Christmas trees behind us, pick what tree they want. If you've got a saw of your own, go ahead and cut down any tree you like. But if you need help, I've got a chainsaw, and I'll be happy to help too," said Steve Robillard, Vets 4 Vets in Northeast Wisconsin Vice President...

North Pole Christmas Village opens for 17th year
WLUK

CHILTON -- People from all over the world visit a Chilton display when it opens every year in November. For many, including its founder, the free entry during the holidays means more than just a fun display.

“Every year, it's just never a question in my mind," North Pole Christmas Village Founder Troy Campbell said. "Now I've got people that depend on me to open up because they have nothing. This is hope.”

.Even after 17 years of operating the Village, Campbell said it never gets old.

“When I first started this, I was a truck driver and I got hit by a drunk driver and I broke my neck in three places and these arms got dislocated," Campbell said. "When I was in the hospital room I said "I want to help people'. My legacy going forward is to help people.”...
