Jason Mathwig joins New North Inc. as Industry Alliance Director

NEW NORTH - Jason Mathwig, a regional professional with extensive experience in developing community partnerships, will join New North Inc. as Industry Alliance Director, President and CEO Barb LaMue announced. The appointment becomes effective on Dec. 5, 2022.

In the role, Mathwig will lead industry alliance outreach and engagement efforts through strategic partnerships with regional employers, as well as workforce development, educational and community-based organizations. He also will provide operational support for the NEW Digital Alliance and NEW Construction Alliance, including project-management oversight for alliance-based activities.

Salm Partners expanding Denmark production, creating hundreds of jobs

DENMARK - One of the nation’s largest producers of sausages and hot dogs is expanding its operations in Denmark in Brown County, creating hundreds of new jobs.

You may not have heard of Salm Partners, but you’ve most likely seen their sausages on store shelves or eaten their products. The company operates two plants in Denmark, and their third facility in Alabama is now relocating next door in a large-scale expansion currently underway.

Salm Partners is looking to add employees to work in the new facility and run additional production lines, opening up new opportunities for job-seekers in Northeast Wisconsin.

DE PERE - Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe plans to open a new location in the Appleton area. Franchise owner Mary VandeWalle says the new store will complete a family dream.

“Uncle Mike, Mike VandeWalle, he was the mastermind behind our success here. He passed away, it will be two years on December 17th due to Covid,” said Vandewalle.

As Vandewall remembers her late husband, her family plans to honor him in a major way.

HOWARD - A sprawling corporate headquarters in Howard will go up for auction at the end of this month with a starting bid of $2.7 million.

Most recently the home of UnitedHealth Group, the 43-plus acre property at 3100 AMS Blvd. has been vacant for more than a year now. The online auction, hosted by Ten-X, begins on Nov. 28 and ends Nov. 30. The auction does include a reserve, or minimum price the owner will accept for the property.

Expert details biogas opportunities for Wisconsin

An expert with UW-Oshkosh says Wisconsin’s farming and food production industries present a “tremendous” opportunity for biogas in the state.

UW-Oshkosh Director of Biogas Systems and Research Development Brian Langolf spoke Friday during an Appleton event hosted by UW-Madison’s Wisconsin Energy Institute. Biogas is a renewable energy source that’s produced when organic materials are broken down by bacteria in an oxygen-free environment through a process called anaerobic digestion.

Langolf argued Wisconsin could become a national leader in biogas production by leveraging the “huge amount of materials” produced by the agricultural sector and food processors.

He noted the state has about 1.3 million cows and 7,000 dairy farms — but only about 40 of those farms currently have a digester system for processing waste into biogas.
