Kraut king: GLK Foods grows beyond sauerkraut into healthy grab-and-go snacks
Insight On Business
For nearly 120 years, GLK Foods, LLC was known for one product: sauerkraut. Through growth and acquisitions, the business founded in Bear Creek eventually became the No. 1 producer of sauerkraut in the world.

But that wasn’t enough for Ryan M. Downs, who became president of GLK Foods in 2012. He wanted to expand the company’s reach and product line beyond just sauerkraut, which is fermented cabbage. Downs, the fourth generation of his family to lead GLK, kept an eye on health and eating trends and noted consumers were becoming increasingly interested in....

Spectrum News 1
Ryan Freckmann sums up 2020 in one word.

“Crazy.”

Opening the door to new possibilities: NWTC bootcamp allows high school students to explore latest AI tech
Insight On Business
For four Saturdays this fall, a group of high school students has the opportunity to examine the inner workings of computers and learn more about artificial intelligence. AI is the simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions.

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is one of six sites hosting a virtual AI Bootcamps Initiative designed by the Mark Cuban Foundation. An entrepreneur and startup investor, Cuban also owns the Dallas Mavericks NBA team.

“AI is everywhere and integrated into many systems we use on a daily basis. This program helps students learn how it works and how to use it,” says Sue Zittlow, an associate dean with NWTC’s College of Business. “It’s definitely a unique experience. I’m excited to....

Critical connection: Issue of broadband access becomes more pressing than ever

Insight On Technology
David Thiel doesn’t have to look far to see the effects of poor access to broadband in his county. As the pandemic took hold last spring and forced schools statewide to close, families in rural and less densely populated areas faced added hardship.

Not long after schools closed, Thiel, who serves as executive director of the Waupaca County Economic Development Corp., received a call for help from Clintonville Public School District Superintendent David Dyb.

“They literally had families driving into the school’s parking lot to pick up homework for their kids,” Thiel says.

Rural school districts statewide have been struggling during a time when students and families are increasingly relying on....
