Calmes’ acquisition expands Consolidated Construction Co.’s services: Appleton contractor increases its carpentry capabilities
FOX CITIES CHAMBER

There’s no question the construction industry is facing a labor crunch. The industry will need to hire nearly 590,000 new workers nationally on top of normal hiring to meet industry demand in 2023, according to a survey by Associated Builders and Contractors.

Without enough skilled workers on staff, most construction companies need to increase their use of subcontractors, which can increase costs and lead to delays. Pamela Talavera, chief operating officer and largest shareholder for Consolidated Construction Co., Inc., recognized another option: expanding the full-service design/build contractor’s carpentry capacity by acquiring James J. Calmes and Sons Construction in Kaukauna.

Talavera, one of the few females to lead a major construction company, was key in the acquisition and integration of what’s now known as Calmes Construction Services, a Division of Consolidated Construction Co.

“Calmes is very versatile and works on a wide range of projects from small renovations to some of our most complex projects,” she said of the deal, which was completed in July. “Carpentry is a fundamental trade and can make or break the success of a project...

Door County Candle Company on a new fundraising mission for Hurricane Ian relief
WBAY

STURGEON BAY - A candlemaker in Sturgeon Bay that’s raised $800,000 for war victims in Ukraine is starting another mission.

Door County Candle Company is giving 100% of net profits from its “Beachside” scented candle to Hurricane Ian victims through the American Red Cross. The blue, 16 ounce candle in a glass jar has “notes of sunscreen and coconut,” according to its website, to remind people of a day at the beach. It sells for $25.95.

The candle company says it was inspired to sell a candle for Hurricane Relief after hearing from a volunteer in Florida who said the blue and yellow Ukraine candle from Door County Candle Company was her home’s only source of light after the hurricane blew through.

HERALD TIMES REPORTER

For nearly three years, the friendly folks at Maritime Ford, 1305 Franklin St., provided a free lunch at a local restaurant to hungry customers and community members.

Sales Manager Aaron Mueller said the dealership decided to provide lunches to unsuspecting customers as a way to help support local restaurants.

“We did it once a month, and it was always a local restaurant, never a chain,” he told Streetwise.

They kicked off the program in October 2019, at first not advertising where it would be happening, but allowing customers to be happily surprised when their server told them lunch was on Maritime Ford...
