WEDC and PSC to launch new broadband technical assistance pilot
WEDC News Release
Six communities will receive technical assistance so they are better prepared to apply for federal, state and private-sector broadband expansion funds under a new joint pilot program announced today by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and the state Public Service Commission (PSC).

The pilot program comes in response to overwhelming requests for broadband expansion as communities throughout the state continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One of the clearest lessons of the past year is that broadband is now as essential to daily life as electricity,” said WEDC Secretary and CEO Missy Hughes. “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that broadband provides a critical link to the....

Formula for success: Rockline Industries, St. Norbert partner on research project
Insight Publications
When Rockline Industries, a Sheboygan-based private-label manufacturer of consumer wet wipes, needed to conduct specialized product research, the company turned to St. Norbert College in De Pere
for assistance.

Doug Cole, vice president of global product development at Rockline, says the company wanted to see how a new antibacterial surfactant compared chemically to one already used by the manufacturer. Rockline makes personal care wipes, such as baby wipes, toilet tissues and facial wipes, under a variety of brand names.

“We were wondering what portion of the molecule did the preservative action and which part killed the bacteria,” he says. “The project required the tri-section of a molecule. It helped us better understand the individual ingredients that we use.”

This is the first time that the global manufacturer teamed up with St. Norbert on research. Rockline has relationships with several colleges and....

The relocation of the culinary arts program to the Cleveland campus allows students to learn and hone their skills in a newly constructed commercial kitchen custom-designed for educational purposes. The move also allows for more convenient student access to vital college services including academic assistance and financial aid, as well as expanded opportunities to become engaged in student activities.

LTC culinary arts graduates continue to be in demand as opportunities increase for professionally trained chefs locally and beyond. The accreditation of the college’s program by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) provides graduates with an additional employment edge as...

New North Region Stepping Up to the COVID-19 Challenge
Change of course: Food, beverage producers adjust to supply, demand challenges
Insight Publications
When Safer at Home orders were put in place last March due to the pandemic, Grant Pauly, the brewmaster of 3 Sheeps Brewing Co. in Sheboygan, knew his business would face challenges. And while he expected changes in consumers’ buying habits, Pauly did not expect difficulty finding enough aluminum cans.

“Our biggest headache has been finding cans. We’ve had can manufacturers tell us a week before we’re expecting a big order that they had to cancel,” he says. “People are drinking more at home and they like the experience of drinking from a can. Last year, 70 percent of what we sold (direct to consumers) was in bottles and now it’s 70 percent in cans. There’s only 30 can manufacturers in the United States right now and they’re all at capacity. And being smaller, it’s harder for us to compete against larger operations for...
